I fly to NYC in about 4 weeks.

There is no way I want to check in my laptop and cameras. Let alone sit through the flight without even a book or magazine. Thankfully it looks like this doesn't apply to the flights leaving US - Aus, as we have a 14 hour flight LA-> Melbourne!

Looks like I'll be shipping beer back from CA to Perth rather than taking it on the plane. I was already planning on taking an extra 24 bottles as checked in, using wine shippers.

Im surprised it took this long to stop beer being brought onto planes. You can get stopped for bringing on nail files knives etc so what is to stop someone with a beer /spirit bottle from using it as a weapon of menace either full/empty or broken.Ive been waiting the day when i was stopped from bringing onto the plane Australias greatest known potentilal weapon of mass destruction or self destruction.
THE DARWIN STUBBIE.

Cheers

I heard you couldn't even bring a book onto the planes. I think that with a 12 hour flight without a book I would actually become a terrorist. Mmmmm?

I reckon scottland yard is doing a pretty good job at foiling these plots. good on em. if we have to live with some inconveniences then so be it. having your hand luggage scrutinised more should create a greater sense of certainty and security, not a greater sense of fear.

I think the terrorists are winning, and the politicians arent trying too hard to stop them. they just introduce new, invasive laws, while petrol & interest rates increase.

:D Reckon i owe you a few beers Pat for two short posts.

Two things,

I think the terorists are allowing fascists to get a greater foothold in democratic countries by allowing them to justify increasingly draconian laws.

The terrorists are incompetent fools, anyone with a year 12 or higher aussie education and a little aussie know how could be far more effective than the hair brained crap they come up with.

Have a beer, relax and let it blow over with a little democratic protest.

Cheers

Yep, no laptops and stuff either. Everything has to go in the baggage hold.

Only things you're allowed on board (in a clear plastic bag):

Passports, Travel Documents
Wallets / Purses, containing currency, credit cards, etc. No handbags
Sanitary towels / Tampons, Unboxed and only a reasonable amount for the flight
Prescription medicine, no liquids unless verified
Glasses/Sunglasses, no cases
Contact Lenses, no solutions though (ie cleaning fluid)
Tissues / hankerchiefs
For those travelling with babies, nappies, wipes, creams, disposal bags, milk (only if tasted by the accomanying passenger), baby food
Keys, without electronic keyfobs

So basically, no magazines, no drinks (except baby milk), no food (except baby food), no books, no mobile phones, no ipods, no laptops, etc etc. Funny thing is, aparently a lot of travel insurance companies don't cover laptops for damages unless they're stowed as carry-on luggage.

Hi Kook,

I heard reports yesterday that laptops are OK for US inbound, only after a detailed examination.

Cheers.

Back in the mid nineties on a flight from San Diego to LA, the airport security person opened our already opened bottle of duty free gin to check that it wasn't liquid explosive. She took one sniff and her head jerked back. So the issue of liquid explosives had been around for quite a while. Probably al lot more we haven't been told (understandably). No bottled water will be a bugger.
