Hand luggage on flights banned in the UK and the US. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before it happens here too.
It is really dissappointing that a bunch of terrorists can really screw with our ability to enjoy life and have the liberties of being able to bring back our favourite beverages from overseas in our hand luggage amongst other things.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government heightened security on passenger planes and barred air travellers from carrying liquids on Thursday after Britain said it foiled a plot to blow up flights to the United States.

Beers,.

Hmmm, that isn't the best news I have heard so far today

I had a mate bringing back a few bottles from the US next week too.

Wrap them well in clothes & put in the check in luggage

Haven't had a breakage yet ................... fingers crossed

Cheers

Hope it wasn't a bunch of pommy brewers talking about taking homebrewed bottle bombs onto planes in their hand luggage...

Announcement today from Qantas:

Qantas said today that it would comply with new security measures
introduced by the United States Department of Homeland Security for
flights into and out of the United States.

The new measures, which apply to all airlines, relate to the carriage of
liquids and gels by passengers on aircraft and the screening of
passenger footwear.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, liquids and gels
include beverages (including duty free purchases), shampoos, suntan lotions,
creams, toothpastes, hair gels and other items of a similar consistency.

Excluded from the measures are baby formula or juice if a baby or small
child is travelling, prescription medicine with a name that matches the
name on the passenger's ticket and insulin and other non-prescription
medicines.

All passenger footwear will also have to be screened prior to aircraft
boarding.

The new security requirements, which differ from those introduced today
in the United Kingdom, do not affect Qantas domestic and other
international services.

Qantas has begun contacting customers booked on flights to and from the
USA to advise them of the new measures.

As a result of the changes, customers travelling on flights to and from
the USA are asked to allow additional time for check-in.

Theres going to be a lot of pissed people at the airports trying to drink the 2 litre bottles of rum before they go on holiday

The macgillas are off to the UK on Thursday flying with Royal Brunei(Super cheap) and they don't serve alcohol(Muslim airline) but supply unlimited mixers for the D/Free. I hope to buggery they don't bring these rules on Royal Brunei or I'm gonna be frazzled by London....especially after ms Macgilla jr cried for 3-1/2 hours of a 5 hour flight from Singapore last year.......

I wonder who is going to pay compensation to all the duty free shop owners in the US?

Earlier this year I went to Palau. Had to travel on a US carrier and go through Guam, a US territory. This meant we had to go through all the heavy handed US approaches to airport security and I have loevly little stamps in my passport by the US Department of Homeland Security. I assume anyone that has to go through a US territoty onto a non-US final destination will also have to comply with the new rules.

Cheers

NEIN!!

I had two bottles of Johnny Walker green about to come over from the UK.

Maybe I can just stick the teat of my little ones bottle on top.

not long ago I saw a show called "air crash investigators" about some bloke who got on a plane from the phillipines to japan and used a bottle of contact lense fluid filled with liquid explosives to blow up part of the plane. one bloke died - the guy with the bomb under his seat. but they managed to land the plane. if it was common knowledge that this could be done, why has it take till now to stop people with 1L of liquid boarding an international flight???

I remember post 09/11 when they banned plastic knives.. they were still serving bottles of crownies on domestic flights. it's a joke...

Can't you buy duty free once you get off the planes and before you go through customs? I do this when I go to NZ, less weight to struggle onto/off the plane with :)

Ok this thread is officially a political pissing pot!

If only the Yanks would just come clean with their real goal and just ban arabs.
They could have a Ronny Regan style announcement declaring as of August 11th we have outlawed Islam, genocidal clensing will begin in one hour.

The goal of a terorist is to make people live in fear. I think ther've already won.

I wonder how long it is before they make us all fly naked in case we are wearing cloth explosives (no one tell them about nitrocelulose).

Mind you that could have some good points.

It could also have some very very bad points as well.

Cheers

SWMBO and I are off to the states and we always take bottled water on board. Do we think that quaintarse will lift its in cabin service to ensure passengers won't dehydrate ? i don't think so !

I reckon scottland yard is doing a pretty good job at foiling these plots. good on em. if we have to live with some inconveniences then so be it. having your hand luggage scrutinised more should create a greater sense of certainty and security, not a greater sense of fear.

You've hit the nail on the head there Dave. Have a read of Geoffrey Robertsons comments at the end of the transcript from Enough Rope(See below). The terrorists have suceeded again by causing fear and chaos as they had hoped by giving it all the media coverage and chest thumping. It is just a snow ball getting bigger and bigger with more and more of our civil rights being eroded under the guise of 'anit-terror' laws. 28 days in jail without a charge - wtf is that?

I really feel that if these measures were going to improve safety, they would have been implemented a long time ago, therefore I dont get the feeling they are doing it to save innocent people. I am very dubious as to whether or not there really was a plot foiled, or if they are just saying that to get some kind of strange new law passed. I for one am really mad about it, it now means I cannot take any nice bottles of wine to my own wedding this year, to thank the people that have worked very hard for my missus and I to make it all work, despite us being half a world away.
I recall their last big terrorist bust in London, where they shot one guy and arrested another. A week later, they were both released without charge. Same as that poor Brazilian guy they shot in the Underground. Makes me wonder if we are going to see in a week that all these guys have been released without charge, or am I being a little too cynical? Only had one beer in the last week, that would explain it!
All the best
Trent
