Just bought a 2nd hand mashing setup :D

Everything is plumbed together for maximum ease. Water is passed through filter into electric water heater - Getting heater on top fitted with digital thermostatic control unit this w/e so that I can set desired temp & walk away. Mash tun has 2" of insulation with a seperate tap to collect the first runnings before filling boiler - Boiler is fired by gas & has a hoist to raise it up for easy pour off into fermenter
Getting real excited.... Thinking of doing a Gales HSB clone as first brew - but soooo much choice :D :chug:

Pic of mash tun insulation...

Not bad. Nice vessels, what are they? Cut and welded bits of stainless pipe? How much did it cost? Is that mash tun screwed to the wooden support that is sits on?

Looks to be complete and ready to go so good work ;) Enjoy.

The boilers are S/S but the mash tun is Aluminium. Not screwed to the support but has brackets to hold it steady. So easy to remove if need be for cleaning...
Price... now not even her indoors knows the answer to that one... ;)

Whew. And it must be kept that tway too ;)

Cheers mate.

Gee some people have an easy live with thier gear .

Spose you wont have any need for those copper boilers now Ross

Pumpy

Pumpy - Just in process of taking them to a specialist to get cleaned - Bit of a tight squeeze to get the copper in - but you never know - Gone from having No gear to an excess (if there is such a thing) over night

Beer God - Just checked & it's all S/S - And metals are my business - oh well...

Just made my chiller this morning - It's attached to a bildge pump as I am on tank water here - No1 Can't afford to waste water - No2 The tank water in hot weather can be close to 30c. So will put bildge & outlet into sink/tub of iced water - should do the trick, I hope....

Nice chiller Ross, how did you bend the copper tubing, mine always flattens out and bends in the wrong spots. I've read that you need to fill it with sand to keep the cylindrical shape of the tube.

Hey Ross,
Nice rig :)
The bilge pump is a good idea. In these water stricken times we must keep wastage to a minimum.
I bought a pump for $18 from Whitworths and pump water from my swimming pool through my chiller. Works a treat.
anyone else recycling their cooling water??

& finally my keg filter - using a 1 micron pleated PET cartridge (washable)...

Filter.jpg

mickem -Scrounged the tube off a scrap dealer mate of mine & just wound it round an old paint tin & making sure I didn't make any sharp bends - worked a treat...

Ross,
Tell us about that filter , what is it , where did you get it , how much

Batz

Mikem108, you can get coils of soft copper tubing (annealed??) from Reece. You can drop the coil over whatever former you want to use and just gently tighten the coils quite easily, no kinks.

Tim, I recycle my cooling water into buckets and the washing machine. The 'first runnings' are hot enough to use for cleanup after the brew, and the rest is great for a warm wash. Doesn't use less water, but at least it gets 2 uses out of it B)

I bent my immersion chiller around a postmix keg. I used 3/8" copper and there was no problem with kinking.

I got the copper from Refrigeration Parts Vic. About half the price Reece quoted me.

Ross your posts are always helpful and informative.

Those picture sizes were huge. Even on adsl they took forever to download. I even stopped them 1/4 way through.

Could you please look at either setting your camera on minimum resolution, or getting some sort of program to shrink the image size.

How come they didn't end up in the little preview window? When I attach pics they always seem to have that grey 'click to enlarge' bar.

If anyone does need a quick image editor, I highly recommend IrfanView - http://www.irfanview.com. It's small, free, easy to use and it rocks.

Ross - what size filter do you use for your brewing water? Could I use the same gadget for water and finished beer (presumably with different gauge filters)? Does it have any effect on chlorine or dissolved minerals?

Wortgames

I use a pleateed PET 1.0 micron & 0.35 micron.
Not suitable for stripping anything out of water other than bugs - hence the reason for using with beer - you could however just switch cartridges between water & beer - dead easy...
