A drink somewhere between coffee and beer could soon be on the menu. Nestec, part of the Nestl empire in Switzerland, has filed patents in every major market round the world on a "fermented coffee beverage" that pours and foams like beer, but smells of strong coffee and packs a concentrated caffeine kick.

The article also includes a brief summar of how they produce it. I don't know what they're smoking when they talk about using temperature control to stop alcohol development, but I'd still like to try the end result.

Yuk, rather drink out of the dog bowl. Whats wrong with a strong fresh expresso?

Go! the Green Tea Rice Lager.... :super:

You can't patent espresso.

The chemists and lawyers at Nstle need to justify their jobs somehow.

I think more important than the temperature is the fact that it is only fermented for four hours.

The yeast have barely had time to wake up and smell the coffee, let alone be thinking of alcohol.

Report them to the RSPCY. I hope it's not ale yeast they use.

Haven't we been making coffe beers (proper ones) for years?

Maybe we should contact the patent office and claim prior art...
