orriginally i posted this in DB but im not getting much feedback so ill try here

hey neil great looking recipe im going to put this one down tomorrow

couple of questions. when inputting the hop schedule into ianh's spreadsheet it comes up with an ibu of 15.8 at a 4ltr boil. i normally add about a 3rd of a tin for this boil so i thought this shouldnt affect efficiency at all. also in the spread sheet it says these hops are 4.2% rather than 6

when i asked my LHBS guys for TF crystal he said its Thomas someone grain. gave me some dark crystal and said that would do the trick. is this right?

didnt have any nottingham yeast and he said while it will be a slightly diff flavour he said safale s-04 would be my best choice.

also he only had 50g bags(bought 2) of hops so should i alter the schedule and add even more or stick to the one u've listed? or maybe dry hop the left overs for a bit of extra aroma?

cheers guys
recipe is for this...

as i understand it, hops change the AA% rating with each batch. the hallertau that i have in the fridge at the moment is 6.3%. your spreadsheet must be wrong. for small boils you should tick the box that says "use hop concentration factor" because it will drastically change the IBU outcome. plugging the numbers in it comes out at about 32IBU which is how mine tasted.

as for the grains - what you want is some cracked crystal 120 grains or similar. nothing too dark, it is a pale after all!

SO-4 should be okay, just stick to the recommended temp and it will turn out okay. i would use US-05 if notto is not available next time.

if you've got two 50g packs, just up the last addition to 40g. it will hardly change the bitterness but will give it a little bit more flavour and aroma. easy!

thanks neil ill head back in to LHBS today and grab some 120. might need to head out to brew craft at some stage they look like they have a huge range of stuff

put it down tonight. cooking smells were alot more subtle than boiling cascade and amarillo. but still smelt darn good. im almost 100% certain my hydrometer is shagged now as it was saing og is at 1.078(temps approx 30-35, still cooling). could not be shagged waiting for it to drop and check again im off to bed. threw some big ice blocks around it and pitched. so either hydrometer is poo or its gunna have one hell of a kick. will post again in about 4 weeks i guess

Killertau, perhaps?

That'd be 120 EBC, not 120L. Lovibond scale is about 1/2 of what EBC is, so 120L would be 240EBC, and quite dark. More like burnt raisins than caramel. Depending on the HBS, will depend on whether they specify the Lovibond or EBC rating. Most would use EBC, but it'd pay to check. Just clarifying...

i still know sfa about grains but it said "light crystal 114-130" so im assuming 120 falls in there somewhere

i think i steeped them too hot too :(. maybe about 80-90...... thought it would have lost alot of temp but after the 30 mins the thick pot im using was still real realy hot to touch. gotta get myself one of those laser pointer thermometers. will hit my old man up for his.

oh well hopefully not any nasty tannins releasd but we will c.

im going to have to go through again and redo all the recipes ive done to date, when i have a good brewing method down pat.

just picked up another 5 fermenters too :p
2 of which are 60ltrs so when i find a mind blowing recipe ill just double batch it and experiment in the 30ltr drums.

slowly getting there i guess

Light crystal will be fine. At those numbers, it'd be EBC.

And don't worry about the temp too much. Boiling them wouldn't be great, but anything less is ok.
