I did my first real partial Pilsener on Saturday - great fun.

3kg Weyermann Pilsener Malt
1kg LME
60gms Saaz @ 60 mins
20gms Saaz @ 30 mins
20gms Saaz @ 10 mins

Mashed with 9 litres of water in 12 litre pot - strike temp at 75, came straight down to 65 after stirring. Still at 65 after 30 mins, quick stir, 63 at 45 mins, topped up with hot water, back up to 65 for final 15 mins. Stuffed up the sparging due to only having a steel conical seive - very labour intensive. Pouring, scooping, spilling, swearing. Ended up with 17 litres of cloudy wort. Took 1 hour to bring to the boil on my electric stove (yawn), added hops and finally LME at 10mins. Put in laundry sink with cold water and ice blocks for about an hour. Seived again into ferment to catch hop sludge. Pitched two packets of W34/70. Sensational day - took 5 bloody hours and about the same in longnecks after clean up! Happily bubbling away in fridge at 10 degrees.
Cheers

Thanks to TD for the recipe - will let you know how it goes.

Did the same Stevo.

Couple of procedure difference and just the 1 saflager - but I did a starter for it and had tons of go to throw in.

And mine is about 13 degrees.

And I used Powells Pils malt.

I actually broke my hydrometre, and need to get a new 1 this week.

Wont be brewing this week but plan on ordering some grain for future brews this week so shall get my guy to chuck one on for me.

Gaah, Boys - I had great plans to do my this weekend whilst the wife was away at a yoga camp (OT - but let me tell you, yoga is good for wives.....!)

I had both kids (2 and 8months) - one of them kept me up all sat night - I mean from 2.00am through, we didn't sleep until 11.00pm last night, so no go on the brewing.

Must get it done, may try for tonight...

Cheers - Mike

It took me 4 hours give or take ten mins and Steve about 5 hours.... So you'd be keen! And hey you still havent PM'd me about the brewers club :(

This brew has dropped 18 points in 3 days! Its down to 1022 from 1040. I normally do my diacetyl rest at 1020 - but that usually takes about 10-14 days! Do you reckon thats because i used two packets of W34/70 instead of my usual one packet?

Cheers

P.S. It tastes bloody bewwwwwwdiful! Very happy!

I noticed last night that mines got a heap of the hops floating on the top.... Was worried about infection until I saw a nice layer of foam underneath.

Will this drop down towards end of fermentation or do I have to be careful when racking to avoid transferring this as well?

Cheers guys.

Yep - it will disappear - so when you are ready to rack the top of the beer will be quite clear. There still will be the odd bubble floating around. She'll be right Drew.

This pilsener partial was at 1008 on Saturday. 7 days to drop from 1040. Thats a record for me for W34/70. It tastes bloody sensational and is now happily sitting at 2 degrees lagering for a few weeks.
Cheers
Steve

Nice..... Unfortunately I dont have lagering facilities, however mine will either be bottled Sat or Sun - More than likely Sat.

Finings will clear it even more but looks bloody lush ATM.
