I am in the market for a new CO2 regulator and was wondering which was is better? I have seen the Harris 601's on eBay pretty cheap but is it a case of "you get what you pay for?"

Ive got two 601 regs and they work well.

Not sure if the MicroMatic ones do this, but the keg pressure often has to drop by a good few pounds before it kicks into action and lets more gas through.

My Harris has been banging away for the last 6 years problem-free. :beerbang:

I have used both the Harris 601 and the Micromatic premium regs. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the 601, but the Micromatic is (IMHO) a better built unit. It just feels more solid. It also comes with an interal pressure relief valve to prevent over pressurisation.

Another nifty feature that the MM reg does that the 601 does not is when you turn DOWN the pressure to your keg, the MM reg bleeds off the pressure until it reaches your set level. The 601 doesn't do this, you have to bleed the gas off via the keg's relief valve.

Also, the MM reg has a little lock-ring to prevent accidental changes to the set pressure. Handy if you have little fingers roving around the place!

Regards,
Tim.

I had 1 MM and 1 Harris, I returned the harris and bought another MM for features Phrak wrote about. ;)

As a retailer the last thing I want is service problems, I now only stock the Micromatic.

Of all the features Phark mentioned, the soft reset is a big bonus.
Micromatic are the biggest maker of specialist keg dispensing equipment in the world so they should know what is required.

The other thing I like about the MM is that it can be serviced with a shifter and they will supply me with a full set of parts. This means I can pull one down and fix it, if someone fills it with beer, in store, you dont have to head of to a specialist service agent, wait a couple of days and pay an arm and a leg to get back up and running.

I cannot comment on the 601, but something that annoys me about the Micromatic is the choice of low pressure gauge. The PRV is set at 4 Bar, so why the hell would you fit an 8 Bar gauge when you'll never get there? And because the gauge goes up so high, the scale is compressed so much as to make settings difficult - more difficult than they need be.

The Micromatics for the American market have a 60 psi gauge on the low pressure side.

Why couldn't we have a more useful gauge similar to our American counterparts?
