hey guys
im heading down to melbourne for a few days each side of new years.
is there any brew pubs that are a must see?
where do the well informed locals drink?
and lastly is the CUB tour worthwhile?

any advice appreciated

go those backpacker hostels :p

St Arnou (http://www.st-arnou.com.au)
Mountain Goat (http://www.goatbeer.com.au)

Both have their own venues and are on tap at a few places around the city.

Billy Bells is also a good one -
Bells Hotel and Brewery - Brewpub
157 Moray St, South Melbourne, VIC 3205

Always worth a look and a taste!

I also think on a glorious summer day getting down the Belgian Beer Cafe on St Kilda road is a pretty good thing to do. Great beer garde!! Kids are welcome and no doubt they will have some festive stuff going on.

Thanks for the link NRB. Have you tried the Xmas Ale?? I will have to get down there this week and have a sample! Last time I was down there they had a blackberry stout on. It was quite good.

Cheers

Try holgate's brewery up in Woodend

Then again, if you go there, come the little bit extra to the Winter's Flat Brewery in Castlemaine, and see the owner, ME.

Spent last week at Woodend(work conference), sampled the Holgate range and stayed a night at the pub, which doesnt look much from the outside, but the rooms have been relatively newly rennovated(18 months ago) and so quite good. Pity the brewery hasn;t moved to the pub yet. They were hoping by xmas but that is unlikely.

Most of the Holgate beers were excellent, including the pils, pale ale, bitter ale and dark mahogony(IIRC) ale. Wasnt a big fan of their double trouble ale or white ale though.

Well worth a trek to Woodend

Cheers

Bluestone Belgian cafe in St Kilda Rd & the European Beer Cafe in Russell St. Also James Squire brewhouse at the Portland Hotel.

Lambsgo Bar at 135 Greeves Street, Fitzroy. A quaint little converted house with a huge range of bottled beers and a cosy, groovy atmosphere. Ross and I give it 6 stars. Well, it gave us 6 star hangovers anyway.

If you are in Richmond the Royston Hotel at 12 River Street, Richmond is worth a visit - very friendly pub with an interesting selection of local microbrews.

You can find reviews, details and maps at http://www.melbournepubs.com.au.

If you get to the Lambsgo Bar, you have to try the passionfruit lambic they have there. It is quite stunning.

Three Degrees micro brewery at the corner Lonsdale/Swanston St
3 Ravens micro brewery in Thornbury
Stockade micro brewery in Dandenong South
Buckleys micro brewery in Healesville
Red Hill micro brewery down the Mornington penninsula

I haven't been to any of them but came across them on a website a few days ago

Along with the others mentioned it would be easier to move to Melbourne and gradually work through them!

Three Degrees doesnt brew as the brewery there is not commissioned and never will be. You can still get some good beers there though and they have one or two of their own which are brewed at Gunn Island Pub Brewery.

Stockade is now The Matilda Bay Garage Brewery I dont think they do tours and they do not have a bar.

thanks for the tips guys

i think i may have to extend my stay though
the belgian cafe seems like a goodin

cheers

The Royston is right opposite the mountain goat brewery & ONLY sells microbrew beers with many on tap... a great venue for the beer lover...

I rang the Lambsgo bar the other day & they recognised my voice instantly - Wortgames & I must have left a lasting impression from our visit 6 months ago...

Hey Mercs Own,
What's up with the 3 Degrees micro?
Why won't it get commissioned?
