I don't have scales that will measure down to 10g incremements so was wondering if someone has a rough guide to how many grams of hop pellets would be in a teaspoon? Or any other similar rule of measurement?

Cheers,

Yoz

The only way i can think of is if you have a 90 gram packet divide it into 9

Pellet's aren't a standard size unfortunately.

If you go to a bigger Coles and look in the kitchenware section you can pick up a Salter Slimmer's scale if you're lucky for about $10. That does 5g increments and is OK, however if you want something better have a look on ebay for some digital scales. I got a 100g scale with 0.01g increments for about $25 with shipping.

I bought a 1000g scale (1g increments) from K-Mart for around $30, it is bettery operated & has a flat, glass, removable top. Pretty handy and better than guesstimation!

yoz EASY MATE

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I've been dividing the old 100g into 10 equal measures up till now but it looks like a set of scales is next on the "to purchase" list, right after the secondary.... and a bl@@dy big pot!

Cheers,

Yoz

yep pay for the scales and a secondary but the Bloody Big Pot you can get at the PISSED AS A FART MIDNITE MART .

Perhaps you should consider the accuracy of your hop utilization before getting too carried away with measuring hops to the nearest gram.

I use the 'divide the 100 g packet into 10' method. With variations in boil times, temperatures and wort densities there's a mile of error possible without wasting time measuring hops with a scale. Still, if you like to do it it's up to you. Just offering an opposing opinion to create some balance here.

*oldbugman hands RobboMC a half kilo bag of hops.

50piles of hops?

so robboMC that would in fact throw the theory of grams / lrt out the window then

in olden days they just used a handfull at the start 1/2 handfull at 60 mins and a 1/2 handfull for dry hopping ?

umm strange that everyones hand was a different size . maybe the master brewer had a hop boy .

50 piles of hops = 50 piles of beer

I'm happy!

that makes sence then.

do you need a hand to drink em :p

You could always buy a $5 stopwatch with that set of scales ;) -

as long as the wort boil is a-rolling (and you've calculated the gravity correctly) then the extra IBU potential from a few grams can be a heck of a lot with a 13% AAU hop and a 70 minute boil

Which is a roundabout way of saying try and standardise your process so you can experiment and replicate your result if necessary.

Cheers

if you're buying scales, try and get ones with 1g increments with a max weight of at least 3kg. down the track you'll probably end up buying stuff in bulk (malt extract/dextrose/grains) and it's very handy to be able to put your container on there, zero the scale and just start pouring whatever you're measuring in

hmmm, look at that, part of the furniture... everyone just thinks thats the normal weight hops are packaged at now..
