May not be too big an issue if you batch sparge as you would drain the whole lot then fill it up again and stir it up ... I think the liquid distribution thing is mainly an issue with fly sparging.

My first go was a disaster, mashed in an esky with no tap then transferred to a bucket in bucket to sparge (which then stuck ...). However the beer was still great.

The mash/lauter tun I have now works nicely and didn't cost that much will do until I get crazy and go HERMS or something.
