Im going to use a 50l SS vessel for a mash tub and would like some ideas as to the best way to insulate this?
I also saw one members photos whose tun had a nice wooden jacket, I would like this option down the track, any ideas as to make this work?

ps my system is modelled on the HERMS systems seen on this site and others

Goto the camping shop ( or Big W ) and buy one of those thin thermal mattress for camping and wrap it around your keg.

Apparently clark rubber and even bunnigns have good things to use. There is stuff that is like bubble wrap and has silver foil on one side. Ill probably be using a double layer of that for mine.

Yeah its great stuff its called air cell or astrofoil its got a r2 rating but you can only buy it in big rolls best bet is to drive around to biulding sites and grab some off the rubbish pile.

djackal,
I had my mash tun insulated in a layer of foam and then cladded with wood. Looked real good, but it was too damn heavy. I just use the foam only now.

Another alternative here It's how I did mine. Works out quite cheap and effective too.

I'll put in a vote for the humble old camping mat. A very cheap alternative, easy to source and cut up etc and mine insulates quite well. I brew outside in the elements and even with the large headspace in the tun I have when brewing lowish OG single batches I don't have a big worry with temp loss. In the depths of recent winter, outside in a strong southerly with the tun only half full at best with the mash, I lost 2 degrees across 90 minutes including about 4 good stirs which obviously increase the potential for heat loss. At the 60 minute mark it had dropped 1 degree. It aint pretty, but it is effective...

I've mentioned this before in another thread but you can't beat a simple and very cheap camping mat. I only get a 1 degree temp shift over a 90min period with this as apposed to 4-6 degree shift without the mat.

It only cost me $5. :)
