I've seen it done here in the States. For stove-top BIABers It seems to be a natural.

I haven't a clue about protein rests and things like that. An oven is fantastic at maintaining a constant temp. Put your bits in a pot up to temp with a tight sealing lid and you are done. If you want to be thorough, stir once in a while.

An oven temp thermo is pretty critical if your oven only goes down to 100C. You need to crack your oven door accordingly and insulate the bottom of your pot

The Aussie alternative is to stick your pot in your car in Summer and wind your window down to adjust heat. :p
Remember to remove token child from back seat before mashing.

IMO insulation is by far easier in that there's no need to move the kettle anywhere, with an adequate layer it is 100% effective and also quite versatile, so it suits urns, bigger non- Stovetop kettles etc. If you don't have a spare jersey, jacket or quilt then the local Op Shop has all that's required.
Its also carbon neutral I suppose...

I have done steeping once or twice in the Oven and it works O.K. I did not put a thermometer in the oven so am not sure as to how accurate the thermostat is at the low end. I have an electric oven with the lowest setting 50C.

Would not really need to do it here at all the temperatures are fairly constant throughout the year. The only frost we see is inside the freezer compartment.

The advice around here for beginner partials used to be that it might be a good technique for some - grain in a bag in a large-ish cast baking thing with lid (I dunno, I'd have to ask SWMBO or Google or something) with water at desired temp and bang it in a pre-heated but turned off oven (can't remember exact temp as I never used the method myself but I recall it being higher than desired mash temp - somewhere near 80C?).

Anyway, if anyone is interested, do a bit of a search as the info is there and DO NOT use the above as any sort of guide.
