Mash Hopping - Waste of Time?

I've got a couple of recipes planned that call for a fair whack of hops to be added to the mash. I've done some preliminary reading and the info I've come across basically says that the mash ins't hot enough to extract bitterness from the hops, and that any oils extracted during the mash will be boiled off in the kettle. On face value this makes sense, but I suspect it isn't as simple as that.

Does anyone regularly mash hop, or have any experience with it and think it's a worthwhile exercise?

Experimented many years ago - Found no benefits, total waste of hops & money....

There again i sell hops... so go for it :D

You'll get 11 different opinions from 10 brewers on this one... For my vote, if you're making a massive beer, can't hurt, anything less than imperial I wouldn't bother.. Save that amount and add it late
 
Plenty of threads on this. General consensus is yes its a waste.
 
Save your pennies, it's a waste of time.

I'm with Ross on this one.
 
That is not to say that you can't reallocate those hops to some stupid late boil or whirlpool time.
