Just venturing for the first time into full AG. My local HBS uses a coffee grinder that I'm informed cracks the grain too fine - so looking to purchase one of my own.
Grumpys sell a modified Marga mill for $160. Can anyone tell me if this is a good buy or if are there better ones on the market? Can't be stuffed with making my own, as just got all the AG brewing gear & desperate to get started

Thanks in advance guys/gals...

Hi Ross,

The Maga mill is a top little mill and I couldn't be happier with mine. HOWEVER it seems the price has risen quite a bit since last year, I bought mine unmodified for $79.00, and the modification costs nothing.
here are some pics of the modifications http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/gall...Name=album11&s=

To be honest you would be better off spending $160 on a barley crusher or some other similar mill from the states.

Regards
Andrew

So - Any reccomendations, or ones to avoid??

Just type in "grain mill" or just "mill" in the search bar at the top of the page and you will see heaps of threads with recomendations for a mill

I got my Marga via mail order from the Bake and brew shop in Adelaide. I think it was around $85 with postage to Syd.
If you feel comfortable doing the mods yourself, its a good cheap option.

Ross,

I have a marga mill, and although its perferctly caplable of crushing grain for brewing there are better mills out there for ~$160. My Marga mill used to struggle with my 10kg grain bill, so i purchased a barley crusher, which is much happier crushing larger amounts and being powered with a drill.

Cheers.

FWIW I got the following quote for a barley crusher imported direct from the source in the US last week - 27/1/05

Stuart, A Barley Crusher MaltMill with the standard 7 pound hopper shipped by US Air Mail, 4-10 days is a total of $165.00, with 15 pound hopper shipped by air is a total of $199.00.
Thank you, Robert

Presumably prices are in US$ - so roughly A$215 to A$260

Hi Stu,
At those prices, dont dismiss the Crankandstein.
Good value for money IMO.
Cheers

Dicko - I was thinking perhaps of seeking out a former barley crusher owner who had upgraded to a Crankandstein, and was looking for a new home for his old mill.

Don't suppose you would know anyone like that?

Hi Stu,
I know a guy that has got a Marga Molino modified mill that got a Cranandstein for xmas but at the moment his son in law has first claim on the Marga so at this stage it is not for sale.
However, should the son in law not come up with a few dollars nor display further interest in building an AG brewery then of course that said Marga Mill will definately be up for sale.
Cheers

Andrew,

I had a look at the modifications you made to your mill and I'm ready to start making them on mine. (After using the hand crank for 5 kgs I decided I would need a drill before attempting a double batch). My question is: What did you use as the drill bit? If its something specialised, where did you get it from. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Cheers

I bought a cheap set of spade bits from bunnings and used the smallest, it fits perfectly.

nifty

The bit I use is a flat head screw driver I had laying around, I just cut the shaft off near the handle. It fits perfectly.

Can someone point me to a barley crusher or like in the price area of AUD 160 delivered Brizzy...
Everything I'm finding is much dearer & therefore leaning towards the modified Marga from Grumpys...

has anyone noticed wear in the crank slot caused by their drive bit?? mine is starting to become an issue.
I think i might get my old man to tap out the hole and i'll put some threaded rod or a hardened screw into it as a permanent solution??
any ideas?

Ross.

I just went through the same exercise as you. After days of searching for options and prices I ended up ordering a Marga Mulino from bakeandbrew.com.au . I just received confirmation of my order. It will cost me $106.95 including $12.00 postage to Brisbane. I begrudge the overseas prices and postage. :chug:

This one works out at AUD 210 delivered. Not rteally into construction myself, so would rather have it done for me...

Better value than the modified Marga at $160??

How important to upgrade to s/s rollers rather than plain steel?

Thanks in advance guys, too late once I've bought one...
