Magnetic Vs Solid Drive Pumps?

Hey

Just wondering what the advantage is over a magnet drive march pump verses a solid drive pump?

I'm guessing it's something to do with when there's a restriction the solid drive pumps could cause cavitation?

What do you mean by "Solid Drive Pump"?
A pump that has the impeller directly connected to the drive shaft (like the little brown solar pumps, fish tank pumps etc)?

If a Mag Drive pump gets feed too much malt or other chunky bits it will stop turning, the motor can keep on spinning.
With a direct drive- well what happens is called Choke and Smoke the motor burs out and it can happen surprisingly quickly and rather spectacularly.

Yeah - where the shaft of the pump is direct attached to the shaft of the motor

Since the impeller is not directly attached to the drive-shaft, a magnetic drive pump (as indicated by MHB) can be throttled by putting a valve on the outlet, in addition they are generally much easier to clean since 'stuff' can't get in and around the shaft/assembly.
