For any of you that have had JW Lees Harvest ale know that it is spectacular. Ive spent about 5 tries to clone it and this is nearly right on. You can substitute some extract for the grain b/c there is SOOOOO much of it. Just be sure to have all the specialty grains in the mash.

Iam guessing he's using more than just a 5 gallon water cooler mashtun. :lol:

you couldnt be further from "cloning" it. Protz gives the ingredients as 100% maris otter and only 34 IBUs of Goldings, with caramelisation providing the colour. it's also only 11.5% which would require a fair bit less than an OG of 1161.

call it a nice barley wine if you like, but a "clone"?

It's the complexity of the recipe (and the estimated og) that seem out of order.

haha,i fell for it!
 
A lot of people fail to realize that to 'clone' a beer, one need not use the exact ingredients the brewery uses. Its how the beer turns out. When I taste them side-by-side, its spot on.

As for honey malt, I dont know anything thats close to it. Its very unique and has a huge honey character. I would probably swith the honey malt for maybe a pound of honey. Should do about the same thing.
