I went and got my blood tested this week for high iron levels (hemochrotosis - abd spelling), my father has it and so does my uncle so I thought I had better as it can run in the family! I was fine for iron levels but my liver dosen't look real good according to the tests!

Has anyone else had any problems with their liver? If you have how do you overcome it? I am only 26 and I thought I wouldn't have a problem! But I can drink 15 Golds and not have a worry about going to work the next day!

Nearly thinking of selling all my gear up cause having it on tap is way too tempting for me! Especially since its been so damn hot there there is not much you can do after work but down some ales!

I really don't won't to give up brewing any help?

Quit drinking for about 3 months - Sucks yes I know.

Then cut back the binge drinking sessions til once or twice a week.

Hey I am 23 and a tad worried bout my liver, do u get pains in ur side?

I'm no medico, but I do know that the liver is one organ that readily regenerates itself, providing it's basically healthy. Drew is right - give up alcohol for three months  and then get yourself re-tested. If it has improved then talk to your doctor about a "sensible drinking plan" :(

Yeah sometimes but not real bad like some of my older friends get! A mate of mine is 51 this year and can drink me under the table in no time! He dosen't get pains I don't think, but he is a machine!

Bad luck Kramer - Liver problems suck :( I've had liver problems in the past due to Hepatitis. I actually had to give up drinking for 2 years and radically change my diet etc for that time. I've gone back to my pre-diet evil ways since the 2 year period finished but still can't drink as much as I could previously due to residual effects...

Depending on what your doctor advises you, and how bad your problems are, a short period off the drink will do wonders. Drink heaps of water, avoid things like paracetamol and coffee and heavy, fatty food and your liver may well come right back to full fitness. A binge 'once or twice a week' is the worst thing you can do - will really bugger your liver up well and truly... All those things were suggested to me my my Drs/Specialists and after following them my liver tests were much better and I now can live without worrying about it all too much. Worth a shot for a month or two before things get too much worse maybe? ;)

Anyway, good luck with it.

Shawn.

Commiserations Kramer - bad news!....I would be cutting down the beer by half and go back in 3 months for another test. I'd rather jump on the ferry and move to Tassie before stopping drinking all together! Just kidding, just kidding all you Taswegians!

Sounds good I will have to give it up for a month or two  see how I go with that! Probably save a heap of money! Might be able to fix some more stuff on the house!

At least that will keep the missus happy!

Good luck mate, I love the drink but am far from an alco, would kill me to stop altogether.

Currently have mon-wed off it and 3 days is a farken effort.

But think of your health first and best of luck buddy.

It all really depends on how your liver has been damaged.
If its through alcohol abuse, then cutting the drinking out, or significantly reducing the intake will help, but if the liver is damaged from abuse of anything else, this may not help at all.

The government guiuidleines , 4 drinks per day and women 2, with at least one alco free day a week, is a good start,
If you are regularly getting paro during the week, particularly on your own, you should look at getting some assistance with the plan, speak toa physician of some type about it.

The thread last year, about "how much do you drink" worried me alot, with some enormous figures,

Anyway hope that didnt sound like my ass talking.

No I don't have a problem sinkas, it made me laugh though, I have a lot of friends come around though who like to have a good session! I have for the last 4 weeks had at least 2 AFD's a week! and have cut down my drinking to at the most 3 - 6 beers a day during the week if I have some, the weekends is a different story though.

I have been trying to keep a healthier lifestyle lately, I would have hated to see the tests 4 weeks ago!

At least I haven't killed my liver through drugs though, so it should come back soon! I hope.

Kramer, as Haemachromatosis is a liver disease, did you ask if the situation may be an early indicator of onset of iron deposits in the liver. Are you of Northern European decent? I think that is a factor in hereditary Haemachromatosis. This info came from a friend who has the desease.

Screwtop, I will have to go to Bundaberg to get some further tests done about the iron as thats where the records are for my father and uncle, they some how do some profiling on our genes with it. I am an Aussie, my ancestors came from Scotland and Prussia, I don't know wether that is a factor?

Prussia is my ancestors neck of the woods Kramer - yep, definitely piss heads :chug:
Cutting down on the big big sessions will help a heap, and as mentioned, diet, caffeine, asprin/paracetamol etc. all have a contributing factor.
A friend of mine just showed me her "Liver cleansing diet" book. I used to think that was a load of hippy alarmest poncey rubbish to be washed down with a steak, butter and loads of alcohol :)
but she reckons she and her friend did it and after 4 weeks they felt like a million dollars (in used notes) so maybe there's some truth in it after all.

Good luck!

All the best with it Kramer.

Its always a bummer when stuff gets in the way of brewing (and drinking).

...and with the money you save, you could put it toward improving your brewing rig.

Just kidding  :p

I have done the Liver Cleansing thing. If you can hack it out for 4 weeks, you can undo years of damage. This one has been proven time and time again.

And no - it is not a weight loss diet, it is a treatment for a variety of liver problems.

Oh man, Caffiene, codiene and THC are my best buddys,...and then there is the beer :excl: :chug:

Don't know if this is of much use to you Kramer, I was advised that regular (within the guidelines) blood donations helps to lower a high iron level , another body here that counts Prussia in the ancestry, wonder if there is a link? All the best with the liver.

When I read about the dangers of drinking...I gave reading! (TIC)

Kramer, Prussia would put you in the ball park. Wish you all the best with the tests etc. There will be a way for you to manage your hobby and intake I am sure. Probably a lot of us could do with a surprise shortening of the leash!

Cheers
