German women can now leave their partners at a special kindergarten for men,
offering beer and entertainment, while they go shopping. "The women are
issued a receipt for their partners when they hand them in and can pick them
up again when they return it to us later," Alexander Stein, manager of the
Nox Bar in Hamburg said. The men are given a name badge on arrival and for 10
euros ($11.80) they get two beers, a hot meal, televised soccer and games.
Stein said the idea for the Saturday afternoon "Maennergarten" came from a
female customer who thought it would be a good way of getting away from her
husband so she could shop in peace.

Looks like it is catching on.

Beer as bait to get boys shopping

TEMPTATION: Male shoppers are being tempted out

THIS is a man's world, as soul legend James Brown sang. But when it comes to shopping, he wouldn't be anything without a woman or a girl.

So Selfridges in Manchester has arranged a special "Boys' Night Out" on December 8 to help the male of the species do its Christmas shopping.

Before all the men and boys run for cover, the shop has laid on some essential ingredients to help them . . . beer, cocktails and loud music.

As part of its bid to snare the male shopper, Selfridges has decided the way to a man's wallet is via the usual channels, so the company hopes that the booze and music will put them so at ease they will abandon their normal reserve.

If the men are still too shy to take the plunge into some serious retail activity, there will be experts on hand to guide them through the jungle that is Christmas shopping.

Shy

Selfridges hopes the bold approach to male shoppers will pay off and from 8.30pm to 10.30pm, the Exchange Square shop will be a men-only zone.

Although tickets for the event cost 10, the tenner can be redeemed against any purchase the man may be tempted to make on the night.

The attempt to lure men into Selfridges for a spot of festive shopping has been welcomed by Dr Delia Vazquez, a lecturer at the University of Manchester in retailing marketing.

"I think this could succeed," she said, "as men are now becoming more interested in shopping and taking more of an interest in the way they look and the clothes they wear.

"When it comes to Christmas shopping, this could help men a lot.

"It is happening under one roof and there are lots of experts on hand to help them make any decisions.

"It also helps that there are lots of other men there on the night doing exactly the same thing.

"Role models like David Beckham have played a big part in making it acceptable for men to think about buying clothes and invest in their image."

Why do I have an image of well dressed Lemmings, one hand on hip, Corona and lemon in the other and both feet on the edge of the cliff?
