when men were men and other gibberish.. (early 1970's)

Carlsberg produced "Carlsberg 68" it was more than the standard Carlsberg Lager but less than Special Brew.

I don't know if it was sold down under but if it was can you point me to a recipe?

In hope. aamcle

I arrived here from Tyneside in the late 1970s and as a CAMRA member I already had a well developed set of beer glands. In those days imported beers were as rare as hen's teeth and I was always on the lookout for them.

Apart from the occasional skunked Lowenbrau or rusty can of McEwans there wasn't much around and I don't remember ever encountering anything from Carlsberg, and doubt if it was any different in the early 70s.

Of course it's all changed since the holy pathway of globalisation opened up, to transport us to hitherto unvisited sunlit uplands of glorious beer choice.

One of the UK forums such as The Brewing Forum or Jims might be a better hunting ground if you haven't posted there as well (I pop in there now and again as well, as a member).

Good hunting.

I tried in the UK first but nobody seems to remember it so I've not been able to find a recipe. :(

I like bitter, stout, pale, or porter but I also like good lager and good lager is hard to find. Oh I nearly forgot a nice pint of mild Mmmm....

Wow, memory well and truly jogged here.  Now, going back over 40 years ago, just prior to my first wife leaving me for the Spanish Electrician (who subsequently gave her a miserable time, karma) in Cardiff one of the occasions that inspired a marital row was when I got pissed up on 8 of these from the local Offie, when I we had friends coming round and I was embarassingly sozzled when they got there.
Bugger, that's an "ouch" moment I'd rather have completely forgotten about.
Thanks for that aamcle.

I distinctly remember the session because of the bottle shape, and the slogan. I remember thinking "Well not bad, I'm not sure about glorious". However they did get me unexpectedly pissed so no doubt way above the strength of Carling Black Label, Harp, etc of that era so they may possibly have been the 68.

You know what, I'd tend to go for a stronger modern Kronenbourg recipe if you can find one, or maybe even a Belgian lager. I reckon it would get you close. I was a big fan of German beers - which were more Dort like in those days - and the Carlsberg was definitely a lot smoother and, well, Non-German.

That's a good idea I'll contact them.

Thanks. aamcle
