At the end of last winter I bought a cheap heat belt + sensor off ebay and now it's looking like it's time to use it.

Only thing is though, I'm not sure how to attach the sensor.

I have a spongy tablecloth that I was planning on wrapping around my fermenter, and then tie the heatbelt around the tablecloth. Would I just sticktape the sensor right onto the plastic of the fermenter and underneath the tablecloth?

The purpose of the tablecloth btw is some insulation and to stop the belt going straight on the plastic.

I don't have a fridge or anything to ferment in (yet...).

Yeah I just tape the probe to the side of the fermenter, directly onto the plastic wall.

Some people put some foam over the probe to try and get a more representative reading of the fermenter temperature rather than air temperature.

Cheers.

Do you set the temp at exactly what you want, or is it just a matter of finding what temp outside works to get the right temp inside?

Typically exactly as I want. There are bound to be all sorts of heat differentials but I've had good results so far.

I believe the heat transfer rate through the fermenter wall to be high enough to give a representative reading of ferment temperature.

When tap off to take a reading for the hydrometer I read the temperature of the sample first. My setup seems to be a 1degree warmer inside the carboy.
