The subject pretty much sums it up but I will elaborate. Was helping a mate with his first brew and when pouring the wort into the fermenter (thin spring water cooler bottle) we didn't have cold water in first and had to commit to pouring. It sort of deformed the bottom of the fermenter but didn't melt anything per sé. We're hoping no plasticky off taste will develop has anyone had any experience here?

The only way you can be sure you're *safe* so to speak, is by using food grade (HDPE[2]) plastic as I understand it.

I don't think it will cause off flavours as the bottle is hot when it is blow moulded. But I may be concerned that it may now have thin spots.
I'd dump it and buy another 12 litres of Aqua to Go, complete with a new fermenter.
Oh, and next time, make sure you have cool water in first.

Yeah hopefully this is the case, it's fermenting away now and seems to be okay, aqua to go is the exact bottle we used :) I have done several batches in them before and always have cool water in first and totally forgot this time :/

And don't pour boiling wort into your hydrometer tube. SWMBO doesn't appreciate it when the tube melts and spills all over the floorboards.

I have done this.....Only once!

I have a real fermenter but enjoy doing the occasional small batch, but thanks...
Don't mention it, it sounds like you've got it all under control.

The tubes craft brewer sell are great. They cope with boiling no worries.
