Hi guys,

I'm building a recipe in hopville and think its IBU calculations are way off.

I'm going to be using 60g of Simcoe (or Chinook - similar AA%) and 60g of Cascade. Boiling a third for 60min, a third for 30min and dry hopping a third. Hopville says 72.9 IBU, but this seems heaps higher than recipes quote that use similar amount of hops.

Any ideas? It's a 25L batch, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Brewmate says higher. I have used the average that brewmate gives for both hops. I would drop the 60min boil until you get to where you want it to go. Or play with the numbers till it looks better. I made a 3C's recipe where I used 200 grams all up for a 28l batch and my first addition was at 30min because of the high aa% hops. Good luck.

New Recipe

Original Gravity (OG): 1.050 (°P): 12.4
Final Gravity (FG): 1.013 (°P): 3.3
Alcohol (ABV): 4.91 %
Colour (SRM): 4.9 (EBC): 9.6
Bitterness (IBU): 88.7 (Average)

100% Pale Ale Malt

0.8 g/L Chinook (11.4% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
0.8 g/L Simcoe (12.2% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
0.8 g/L Chinook (11.4% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)
0.8 g/L Simcoe (12.2% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)

Single step Infusion at 66°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes

Fermented at 20°C with

Recipe Generated with BrewMate

Simcoe 13.0% (Chinook similar from memory)
Cascade 5.5%

Hopville reckons:
60m boil Simcoe adds 29 IBU
60m boil Cascade adds 13 IBU (maybe this is a waste of Cascade hop?)
30m boil Simcoe adds 22.3 IBU
30m boil Cascade adds 9.4 IBU

Terrible literacy from my part I dialed in Chinook and Simcoe. New ibus in brewmate is 69.7 ibu's.for Simcoe and Cascade.
