really turning into a hop head over the last 6 months and was wondering what hops you recommend for a one type of hop around the 40 to 45 ibu range?
I really like the LCPA cascade style and have tried same thing with galaxy and have one down for christmas for the boys atm. :icon_cheers:

what other hops would you recommend for using one type of hop with a higher ibu rating?
I like galaxy but to be honest like the flavors that come out more in the cascade but want to try something new and steer away a bit from little LCPA.
went to a home brew shop the other day and there were quite a few to choose from so thought what better but to put a post up and see what other brewers have to say.
what would be a good hop for that ibu rating that will come up nice and bit boutique?

cheers

Simcoe is high AA and has a great profile
Columbus is also very aggressive, with a piney grassy flavour and aroma
As is Chinook, which is one of my favs but since you mentioned steering away from LCPA... probably not appropriate unless you like LCPA 'Classic'

I like Simcoe and Amarillo. Individually they work well, and paired they are fantastic together. Both high AA hops with lots of aroma and flavour. Centennial is also nice. And Chinook as Argon said.

Pacific Jade or Citra, both are high in AA. or do a combo.

Cascade for Bittering
Pacific Jade for Flavour
Citra for Aroma

Citra plus Nelson are a great combo.

I'm using stella as a bittering hop, and I can't really pick much flavour from it, but bittering has been smooth - not at all harsh.

I'm going to try magnum and (shock horror) POR one of these days, just to see if I can nail them.

But my freezer never is missing either Citra or Nelson.

Goomba

Plus one for Argon's suggestions. Especially the Simcoe. I will put that hop in anything where it is even remotely appropriate (and sometimse when it isn't).

Duck's nuts.

Not really a high AA% hop, but i get massive wood for B Saaz at the moment. It's coming close to knocking NS off it's perch..

Northern Brewer is better for wood.

HIYOOO!!!

I just got hold of some Falconers flight from Ross, 10.5%AA . It might be suitable? It is a blend of a number of hops and designed for North Western American IPA's. Going to put an IPA together Sunday or perhaps sooner if I can skive off work Wednesday or Thursday... :icon_cheers:

Falconer's Flight? They've been reading too many Wilbur Smith novels. What a stupid name.

True, odd name but google it and the second result comes up with an explanation for the name. Nice story, don't know the bloke but fair enough really. End result will be in the beer for mine. :icon_cheers:

It's a "blend" of hops?

So it's not a new hop - just the old crap that wasn't selling pelletised and given a romantic name?

Marketing genius.

I like to blend hops myself. In the kettle.

My blend of POR, 2005 Cluster, slightly rotten Chinese Saaz and a strangled kitten carcas is called, "Eaglerider's Missing Testicle".

It has notes of vomit, mothballs and the last tampon used by a menopausal woman.

yeah a blend, nothing new to release this year, need to keep the 'something new on the market' interest up and have released a blend instead. I quote "This novel proprietary pellet blend is comprised of many of the Northwests most unique hop varieties and is perfect for any Northwest-style IPA. Each hop has been hand selected for its superior aromatic qualities, imparting distinct tropical, citrus, floral, lemon and grapefruit tones".

Hey, you never know...

Yep, last off topic, sorry.

I love Centennial. I've been brewing for only a couple of months and am on my second kilo of these. Just fantastic and my favourite by a long way.
