Recently there has been a pretty good rush to join my 'Grow-Hops' group -- 87 new members in the past week to bring the total to 496 members -- with _many_ of them expressing interest primarily due to the impending hop shortages and price increases; that is based on comments submitted to me at the time of their membership application.

Anyway, given the circumstances, I thought I would post this message to let folks know what we are doing -- that we are available to offer help to anyone who wants to start into this extra dimension of homebrewing -- that our group is a valuable resource of LOTS of info on the subject, pretty much _specializing_ in hop-gardening with a tad bit of info about growing herbs as alternatives/supplements to hops -- and that it's probably not too late in most areas to begin important preparations NOW for planting in the spring. Although it is not absolutely essential to do things now, it will be a big help; if you're way up north and your ground is already frozen, you'll just need to prepare your bed in the spring. Also, some of our members are organizing a rhizome exchange (the rhizomes are what you plant instead of seeds), and I also have a database set up on our webpage to facilitate exchanges of rhizomes. And our Links section will lead you to a _vast_ selection of all sorts of information on the subject, plus we have lots of photos to give you ideas on support structures such as trellises and arbors. Without a doubt, 'Grow-Hops' is now the best Internet resource on the subject. Anyone who is interested should visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Grow-Hops

Having finally grown some hops myself, I can tell you that it was _not_ difficult (and I live in the south) and I found it rather enjoyable and 'cool' to do. I'm very glad I started. My first-year harvest was only 42 dried ounces, but the quantity increases as the plants get older; in a thread in rec.crafts.brewing Denny Conn said that he gets from 3 to 4 pounds from one plant -- http://tinyurl.com/2q7rlz -- but I'll be more than happy if I can get just a pound from each plant, which is very likely next year.

Cheers.

Good timing Bill, there are a number of people here that will probably be interested in more info on hop growing - I've joined up :)

It might be worth noting that most of us here are just coming into Summer. Those up north aren't too worried about the ground freezing. We're more worried about the dropbears eating our entire crop...

dropbears eat hops!!

Nobody told me that!!!
How do you keep them off?

Just leave some full cans of VB around the base of the vine. As usual, make sure you remember to put plenty of vegemite in your hair before you go outside; it's best to be safe.

Thanks for the reminder, Mark. Grow-Hops is truly international, with some members from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa -- IIRC, we even have one member from South America. But sometimes I just forget that seasons are opposite 'down under'. I guess most of you have your bines up by now, don't you? Anyway, I know that we can all learn a lot from one another regardless of where we live.

Cheers.

Be careful at night BF don't stand under the Bines. You'll have the livin hell scratched out of you if one falls out of the bines.

Hell...I forgot about the drop bears. I think one has been relieving himself into my hallertau, it's not looking too healthy...

You should be able to join just be sending a blank mail to [email protected]

but I'm already signed up with them ... actually let me try it from work.

Yeah that works. Then you click on the link in the mail and that takes you to a big long page.
Waaaayyy at the bottom is a tiny link that says "join the mailing list instead" and you can
click on that and you don't have to sign up with yahoo but then you can't access the web page of the group,
but if you just want to send and receive emails, that's what you do.

Awesome stuff Bill. An excellent idea, a co-op hop exchange sort of thing going with the Hop Exchange Database. I too have hops to give away every now and then and may join up to post them, plus some more would always be good.

I did post some time back that in the years to come craftbrewers will be able to identify others by the hops growing around them.

Fresh hops are great to brew with. I have only tried POR but even those impart a great experience to your beer.

EKG coming up this year so looking forward to those.

cheers

Hahaha, I thought that was reeeeeaally early to be digging around in preparation for next spring - 9 or 10 months away :)

I'll go and join up now anyway - I already use Yahoo for mail and a postie bike forum so I should be sweet.
