Hi Guys,

I am about to do a brew with some home grown EKG hops courtesy of a friend. I am an extract brewer.

Can I just throw the flowers in the boil like I do with the pellets? Also, when I use pellets I ordinarily throw the entire boil, hop residue and all, into the fermenter. Can I do this with the flowers as well or do I need to strain the boil into the fermenter to stop the flowers going in?

Assistance appreciated.

You can definitely throw them in the same as you would with pellets.
You will find they take up more volume so you might want to consider preventing them getting in the fermenter with some kind of filter out of your kettle. But it's no different to letting pellets end up in the fermenter, exactly the same product, just in original condition.
You could always use a nylon bag to put the flowers inside of in the boil, to achieve the same end.

I use my old BIAB swiss voile bag as a hops sock. Works a treat and keeps the shit out of my beer.
