Folks,

can anyone explain to me what the difference is between the hop varieties Hallertauer (German trad.) Hallertau Hersbrucker and Hersbrucker? I have a recipe for a Belgian Trippel that asks for Hallertau Hersbrucker, but my homebrew shop guy has never heard of them and I can only find reference to Hallertauer or Hersbrucker as seperate varieties, on the Net.

Cheers - Snow.

HALLERTAUER HERSBRUCKER
Grown Germany
Profile pleasant, spicy/mild, noble, earthy aroma
Typical use finishing for German style lagers
Example Wheathook Wheaten Ale
AA Range 2.5 - 5%
Substitute Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Mt. Hood, Liberty, Crystal

HALLERTAUER MITTELFRUEH
Grown Germany
Profile pleasant, spicy, noble, mild herbal aroma
Typical use finishing for German style lagers
Example Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams Boston Lightship
AA Range 3 - 5%
Substitute Hallertauer Hersbrucker, Mt. Hood, Liberty, Crystal

NZ HALLERTAU AROMA (an organic version also exists)
Grown New Zealand
Profile Said to be a replica of German Hallertauer Mittelfrueh
Typical use fine aroma hopping
Example Coors, Coors Light
AA Range 6 - 8%
Substitute Hallertauer Mittelfrueh, Hallertauer Hersbrucker, Tettnang, Crystal

From memory the difference is where they are grown. eg HERSBRUCKER and MITTELFRUEH are places in Germany.

Hope that helps,
Doc

Thanks, Doc.

Are Hallertauer Herbrucker relatively easy to obtain in Australia?

I'm not sure.
I've got a bag of Hallertauer Herbrucker plugs in the fridge at the moment.
I generally get my hops from ESB in Randwick.

Cheers,
Doc
