Hi,

New to extracts, this is the step I am taking to BIAB.

Been kit brewing for 10+ years now, simple, straight forward.
a lot of the extract recipes have instructions like...

5g Galaxy @ 30 mins
15g galaxy @ 15 mins
15g galaxy @ 5 mins
15g galaxy @ 0 mins

I am unclear as to what this means ie, "5g Galaxy @ 30 mins", after 30 mins of boil add the 5g or boil 5g for 30 mins?

"15g galaxy @ 15 mins", 15 mins before end add 15g to the already 5g (or should the 5g be removed first and if so how long to leave it).

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

5g @ 15mins = throw in 5g for 30minutes

0mins = flameout ... throw them in, lid on a sit for a while before draining through chiller or into cube.

Typically most people boil for 60mins and to a lesser degree 90mins.

Generally speaking , early additions (ie @60mins) are for bittering and late additions are for flavour and aroma.

you have had to many :p

ok it is start the boil (keep a eye when it starts to boil as it will boil over FAST!)

once the boil settles down add the hops and start the timer (so your timer will be set at 30mins and you will add your 30 mins hops) So 5g galaxy goes in @ 30 mins
you wait 15mins (till there is 15mins to go) and add your 15g
wait another 10mins and add another 15g
when you turn the flame off add the last 15g

So you start the time at 30 and work your way back so when the timer hits 15mins you add that addition when it hits 5 mins add that addition when it hits zero turn the heat off and add that edition.

Then put the pot in a water bath and change the water till the pot is cool ,or if you are doing a mini boil you can chill some water and add the hot water to the chilled water to get around 20deg

Think about it as a countdown. If you're doing a 60min boil once the liquid is boiling the countdown starts at 60. If you had an @60 hop addition you would put it in now, if you had an @30 addition, once the countdown reached 30min remaining you'd throw it in then. An @10 would be thrown in when 10 min remaining.

"flameout" additions are done at the moment you turn the heat off and start the cooling process.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks everyone, its all beginning to make more sense now.

Cheers
