Yeah, and on that BeerSmith link I posted earlier...PBW contains sodium percarbonate, which is an 'oxygen based cleaner', and the Beersmith guys say using oxygen based cleaners on aluminium can break down the oxide layer on the inside. It reckons to use just dishwashing soap and a soft cloth (and to bake your alum pot in the oven for 10 minutes before first use).

I had a 15L starsan solution being pumped from my 19L Big W pot through my plate chiler and back again, on Sunday. No problems with that pot right now, but it was only for 30 mins or so, not hours.

Big W pot is SS not aluminium, so there wil be no issue.

Im guessing where the dark patches are where you sprayed?

Did a similar thing with my ali pot and stupidly soaked it in sodium percarbonate. Well it stripped it right back and looked to be brand new, as in it stripped the oxide layer. I did a bit of searching and found a post to burn it back in. Anyway half a gas bottle later (when I was using a Mongolian) I had burnt the oxide layer back in and shes all good now, just a tad uglier. Pot will be fine so dont worry but good learning process.

I soaked my ali crab cooker in an ali pot, pot was fine but the bottom third of the crab cooker is now black

I'm surprised that happend. I don't wash my kettle anyhow but I thought starsan was a really low acid cleaner. Well I know what I won't be doing. I just pick up a 120L alloy pot for $80
