Hi There,

My wife is going to make me a grain bag from calico.

What type of sterilising powder should I use to get the bag nice and clean?

Cheers,
Jase

Napisan or some other nappy cleaner.
Excellent cleaner and sterilant.
If you buy the generic brand, dirt cheap too.

Not sure if calico is porous enough.
I'd recommend cheesecloth or muslin. I've used both.
They're both cheap.

If I need to steep grains I just use pantyhose.
Buy a new pair (unless you want some funky beer) and cut one leg off.
Boil it in water for a while to remove any smell or colours that may run, rinse and dry.

Put the grains in the hose and tie the end.

Works well for me.

Can be a bit hard to untie at the end and sometimes I have just chucked the whole thing out, but I try and untie it, empty the grains and rinse the hose for multiple uses.

Hells bells guys

I have not used grain bags for a while but I still have some , just checked the price $1.35
These hold around 4 kg of grain if needed , I just chuck them out but you could wash them.

Cheap as chips , why bother with all the other sh&t

Like the wiezguy said, I don't reckon calico will work. I use muslin bags I bought at my HBS for a buck each. Hold about 2kg at a pinch but I only use them for specialty grains so only need to hold up to a kilo.

As for sterilising, you don't need to. You boil everything after you take the bag out. Just make sure it doesn't have any detergent or scent in it from the washing machine. I don't wash mine, just rinse thoroughly and leave on the line for a week.

That'll be the same as I get .35c to deliver to the Pilbara

$5.20 if big d ordered some I bet :(
