Hi

Where can i get some hop plants to plant in my backyard here in Sydney ?
can anyone recomend a good varity
;)

Should start appearing in HB stores about July
The ones I know have them Goliath Brewing & Grumpy's, I've heard POR and cluster grow well in Aust.
I bought Williamette and it carked it...then I read in BYO "grow williamette if its not too hot" I guess Sydney was too hot for it!

Thanks mikem108

What about cascade hops are they suitable for Sydney

hey Cheif,

You can order Hop Rhizomes from www.grumpys.com.au (in SA) and they post them to you.

I spose Pride of Ringwood might be the easiest type to look after as it is an Australian type of hops therefore would adapt better to Sydney conditions.

But from the sounds of things, most can be grown OK with enough light and care.

(P.S i haven't grown any yet but planning too, above info is based on what i've read)

cheers,
:beerbang:

Check out other posts about Cascade, there is possibly some urban myth business about that one and its disease carrying potential, Consequently I haven't seen it for sale here

What are Rhizomes? are they Seeds or small Plants (seedlings) ?

Google can be such a wonderful thing.

I just typed two words hop rhizome and got 9000 hits.

If you know how to query it then "No".

I'm in Sydney and have ordered some hops rhizomes from Grumpys for this seasons plantings. Fingers crossed they survive the climate and the dog

Yes. Checkout their online store here
They will ship mid July according to their website.

Beers,
Doc

sweet thanks Doc.
Any other Sydney Hop growers about who would be looking to swap homegrown hops or rhizomes in the future??

Also visit www.brewgoliath.com.au for 2005 rhizome orders.

They will be available from about mid july till end Sept.

I haven't had any variety die but some grow slower than others and you just cant go wrong with good old Pride of Ringwood.

Regards
Dave

BigAl etc

I knew Daves post about hop viruses was here somewhere, but took a while to find it, and I still cant work out the quote thing.

Anyway, he said a while ago about Cascade being a carrier for the virus:

Let's clear up the virus issue.

Hop latent virus is exactly that. Latent! The fact it exists (in many varietes) won't necessarily have an effect on yield, nor will it spoil your beer.
I know Grumpy's are selling them without any problems, they are OK to grow, so don't panic.
Generally, in the commercial environment, growers will grow them separately from other varietes, that's all.

Dave

Spot on Dave!

There is no troubles growing them.

Here is the USDA Hop Variety Description.
Pedigree: Fuggle X Serebrianka-fuggle seedling plus another variety?

Diseases: Downy Midew resistant in the crown, moderately susceptible in shoots and cones.
Moderately resistant to vercillium wilt
Free of Prunus Necrotic ringspot and Apple Mosaic Viruses.
Infected with Hop mosaic, Hop latent and American Hop Latent viruses.
Storage stability is poor.

So there you have it.

My grower does not have it on his list this year, but did last year. We will know more closer to July.

Regards
Dave

And of course the 'Monk sells hop rizomes, and for less than most others!

JM

FYI,

Grumpys have cancelled my hop rhizome order.
Apparently they aren't sure which varieties they will be getting in this year.

To prevent confusion and disappointment we will cancel this order and once they become available we will enable customers to order them

So if you were going to order via Grumpys, hold off for a month or two.

Beers,
Doc

So what do you guys do..Order the plants every year, or make new Plants / Prune every year from the old ones

Yep,
HBS's won't be getting any rhizomes from the growers
for another three or four months.
Who knows what will be supplied and in what quantities?
When Goliath, JM and Grumps get them in, I'm sure
they will notify the world. :)
