Drink: The History of Alcohol 1690-1920
14 June 2006 - 31 March 2007

Free exhibition in The National Archives Museum

This exhibition traces the history of beer and spirits. It will examine how successive governments have regulated the industry through taxation, and attempts by Customs Officers to stamp out smuggling. Consumer protection will be illustrated by an unusual 1700s tavern mug, stamped with an official capacity mark and documents which reveal Thomas Paines agitations as a Customs Officer before he wrote his revolutionary book The Rights Of Man. Many nineteenth century advertisements and brand labels will be on display, testament to the significance of the drink business. The first ever trademark, registered by Bass, will be included. The exhibition ends in 1920 after pub culture was undermined by legislation to control drinking, particularly among munitions workers, during the First World War.

would be very interesting though..

Imagine, legislation denying poor English munition workers a pint. Outrage!

OFF TOPIC BUT: I remember using Italian Carcano M91 6.5mm ammunition from a Turin munitions factory. On average 1 in 10 had no charge and resulted in a hang fire. Maybe they should have introduced such legislation in Italy.

Ooh.. Will try to check this out :)
