Well i chucked a fresh wort with a Wyeast liquid yeast thingo. It has now grown its own personality and has started foaming thtough and out of the airlock. It is only 2 days old. Temps were good at pitch time, and is sitting comfortably at 16-18*is this a bad thing? What would be me next move??Cheers

If it was me

While it is still spewing,
clean it externally, and keep it clean (a couple of times a day)
Don't worry about opening it up until it slows down.

Once it is no longer spewing crap out I would remove the lid,
Clean / hose the lid and shoot water through the air lock,
Spray the lid with starsan mix
Put lid back on and refill airlock.

It wont hurt the beer; and next time don't fill up the fermenter as much.

Click the link from NigeP62 and have a read, plenty off good ideas.

what wort kit and what yeast? what size is ur fermentor. Search blow off tube.

The airlock is really only serving to keep airborne nasties out.
If you took it out and just covered the hole with something like an upturned cup, you would also be fine.
You could also investigate dispensing with a lid and airlock altogether, just search for 'gladwrap on fermenter'.
Congratulations on your foamy krausen, always a happy sight.
I've been thinking about getting a t shirt knocked up - got krausen?

In the micro lab, we work next a Bunsen burner to keep bugs out, you could use this principle if you wanted to open the fermenter or airlock without risk. I wouldn't but you could.

Spraying the foam with (sterile) water, or better yet, absolute ethanol (if you can get it (emphasis on the if)), will reduce immediate foam. Again, I wouldn't but you could.

I reckon QldKev's on the money.

It's not a bad thing, just needed a bit more head-room is all.

With that level of yeast-activity airlocks get even more tedious than before, so if it was me, my next move would be cling-wrap:

Or if it was really active, a blow-off tube:

My last hefeweizen filled the airlock and lid 3 times over 3 days before I installed a blow-off tube in its place once I got sick of cleaning it all up!

Sorry guys, ive been crook. Thanks for the advice, will get cracking on it. It has slowed down and is gurgling nicely. Will look into the glad wrap idea

I've made a blow off tube and works well. A lot less mess, if any. I highly recommend it.

It is a norm size 30 lt or so fermenter. Made a 23 lt batch with wyeast big long name wheat beer yeast.

Seems to be a common occurance for wheat beers to go mental. Is there a reason for it??0

Yeast is very happy when it foams through the airlock. This is not a problem of the ingredients. This is a gear problem. 2 days...yep...that sounds about right. The yeast is most active.

Go get another siphon tube. Sanitize it. Yank out your airlock, shove about 2cm (as little as possible ) of the new tube into the grommet where the air lock was. Shove the other end into a jug of clean water. Set the water jug at the same level as the bottom of the fermeter.

Enjoy the bubble noise.

When it slows down, remove the blow off tube, put your newly sanitize airlock back, take the water to the kitchen and make a scotch and soda with it.

I am guessing that would be 3068. Bit of a party animal that one!
