Hi all,

I recently got a bunch of bottles with the flip-top lids from Brewcraft. So far I've already had two go *pop* and break off at the neck (two separate batches by the way).

In all my years bottling with old long necks saved up from various drinking sessions, I think I've only ever had a handful explode, and usually it was spaced out over a long period of time.

Is this something I can expect to happen on a regular basis with this style of bottle or could it be that Brewcraft sold me some dodgy bottles? (I wouldn't be surprised if it were the latter to be honest).

I really love these bottles too, they make bottling day just so much easier.

Cheers

are they brown big (700ml'ish?) swingtops? heard of the hopvine they break, probably a glass thickness issue.

dodgy bottles imo. if you want fliptops use grolsch bottles, i know their small but they dont go pop unless you overprime or bottle to early.

That's them. Bugger!

I had a closer look at the broken ones and the point where the top attaches is rather thin. Damn it!

Brad,

Thanks for the heads up on this. You have alerted us all to potential public danger. Nasty things, exploding glass bottles.

Especially concerned because I recently bought the same bottles myself, but am yet to fill them.

Read somewhere that increasing or decreasing the ullage (air space) at the top of the bottle can help avoid bottle burst.

What quantity of priming sugar did you use? I think I might go with one carb drop instead of two at first and see how they go.

Any pics of the damage?

Cheers

I bottled a beer for my sister's wedding in these a few months back shipped five boxes of them up to the Hunter a month before the big day and two bottles exploded in the storage period before the wedding. Rest of the bottles stayed in one piece none seemed over carbonated so I would definitely use some caution if you guys are using these.

I've never had a problem with them... although i've only been using them for a year. These are my favourite bottles. The grolsch are great too, but you have to keep them lightsafe.

Talking to the guy at my local brewcraft, they're recommending either bulk prime or dextrose priming only with their glass bottles as carb drops can be a bit unpredictable. Not sure how accurate this is, but not really keen on taking the chance and losing a few bottles or worse.
