Your process sounds a bit different though Hoppy, at least you had some hot water in the FV with the extract before you topped up (although why you wouldn't stir it I don't get). David added the can contents after filling up with cold water to 23 litres from the sounds of it....so not hot water in the FV to dissolve the extract at all.

Reminds me of cuppa's my mum makes. She never stirs the sugar, so coffee/tea is still bitter, and at the bottom you find all this sugary gunk.

All I ever had left in the bottom was yeast so really just a mute point. It only matters if you are after a gravity reading.
 
David, can I ask how you ended up going with this? Specifically, after bottling, did you notice goo still at the bottom?

I've got the same problem.
