Huge failure by me today, but I learned a LOT!

Started out bad when I didn't realise I would lose so much heat from my strike water by not pre heating the mash tun.

Got worse when I tried to fix this problem by adding boiling water to bring temp up...ended up having to add 8 litres!!!

Knew I was pretty much stuffed at this stage but plodded on to get familiar with my system.

OG of 1.014 was almost the final straw to tip the brew...that came when I couldn't boil my wort (buying a gas burner to rectify this...damn weak electric element) and dropped the lid of the kettle right into the brew! Couldn't retrieve it without risking third degree burns, so I called time!

A few kit mods to come...combine these with my new found knowledge and I will try the recipe again next week.

A few Creatures Pale Ales will dull the pain tonight!!!

we all learn and return to brew another day...anyways where do you live in this big country

I have the occasional mishap, but mostly due to a little too much sampling whilst brewing...................

Only recently moved to all grain myself had the same problem with strike water, milling issues, time issues forgetting to rehydrate yeast with everything going on bashed together brewrig starting to wobble really started to doubt myself but perseverance and you will soon be making great beer

hmmm... preparation preparation. Still even with preparation it's you find things you didn't prepare for!
still, it seems like calculations were off somewhere- just losing a few degrees from not pre heating mash tun shouldn't have turned into a disaster.
where are you chrisluki? and what kind of beer were you making?

Down in Hobart guys.

Preparation and inexperience when things went askew...that's what I put it down to. I work for a big brewer but have never actually brewed at home, let alone 3V. I know a fair bit of stuff from learning at work and thought I could work it out by reading HEAPS and relying on a few tips from some craft brewery mates (thanks OJ but you couldn't save me!)...

I know what I did wrong now, I just pretty much diluted the s##t out of the mash by adding all the extra water to get up to temp...you live and learn!

It hasn't broken me, I am trying again next weekend!

BTW if any of you live near Marrickville, check out Batch Brewery at 44 Sydenham Rd...my mate runs this little craft brewery behind a garage door...great beers and he loves to chat about all things brewing and what he has learned!

Just remembered another stuff up from my first brew day. Had a 400g bag of milled chocolate grain measured out 50g in a bowl then threw the left over in the bag straight into the mash! Damn that was a dark beer
