Hi All,
I used to brew a long time ago when I was a lot younger in the 90’s, though after a terrible accident with an exploding bottle and my best mate nearly losing his eye (they saved the eye, but he lost partial vision for ever) after that tragic accident we stopped brewing! That night still haunts me to no end, as it should have been me to get the beer from the freezer, not my mate!
After lots of thought, I am about to give brewing a try again, this time using the PET bottles provided in the DYI Coopers kit. I am about to order the following and would like some of you experienced brewers to offer some advice on my order if possible.
I live in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia and I am sick of paying high prices for average tasting beer. As Malaysia is a muslim country alcohol has a high tax with the price.
I am a Chef and I am always tweaking my recipes to get better flavours and textures, So I feel with some practice I will be able to do this with my beer.
I thinking about out purchasing a basic DYI coopers kit and the following:
1 x Basic DIY Coopers home brew kit (DYI kit with the collar, PET bottles & Pale Ale concentrate)
1 x Coopers malt extract (I am leaning towards amber malt, instead of using the brewing sugar)
1 x 14 gm bag of Cascade hops
1 x 11.5 gm Safale US-05 yeast
I have been reading a lot about DIY coopers home brewing online on this forum & my mates back in Aus have been brewing for donkeys & have been sharing a lot of knowledge with me too.
So I hope I can produce an excellent first batch.
I am now leaning to get the DYI Coopers home brew kit with the collar and PET plastic bottles, most of my home brew friends are getting very good results from this product with no breakages.
As you would well know, most first timers always produce an average tasting 'homebrew' just with the basic kit.
Though with some more additions to my first batch I feel I can reduce this & produce an excellent beer.
I have been reading that it is recommended to use a better quality yeast like a US-05.
Also with addition of hops, seeing I will be doing a Pale Ale I am thinking of adding some Cascade hops too.
Will 14 gm of hops enough to help the entire batch?
I also want to use coopers liquid malt extract instead of sugar, perhaps an amber malt would go well with a Pale Ale?
If I am using a un-hopped liquid malt would I still need to use a brew enhancer?
I am sorry for so many rookie questions, but I am really aiming to produce an excellent first batch with plenty of WOW factor!
Thanks in advance for all your help and look forward to getting all of this finalized so I can put down my first brew and hopefully many more!
