I've been chucking my hydrometer in hot wort for as long as i've brewing all grain, hasn't busted yet.
I've always put my hydrometer in the hot wort just after I've fired up the ring. Never cracked the glass, but it did melt one of the little lead balls inside it which became detached and causes the hydrometer to be off-balance. This results in it leaning against the side of the sample tube and not reading correctly
$13 Chineses refractor from eBay with ATC, simples. I do, however, put the pipette in the freezer for 20 secs to drop the temp.
