Has anyone got a good extract esb recipe that is worth doing?

Here's a pretty easy one I did earlier this year, turned out to be pretty nice beer.

Super Pale Ale - 22 litres - 5.7% abv

1 can Coopers Pale Ale
1 can Morgans Caramalt
0.5 kg Light Dry Malt
0.25 kg Brew Enhancer 2
0.5 kg Crystal Grain - steeped 30 min at 65/70 deg C
25g Goldings Hops 20 min boil
25g Fuggles Hops ( 12g boiled 10 min, 12g boiled 5 min )
Yeast of your choice - use the kit yeast or buy a dried Ale Yeast at the HBS with the ingredients

This makes quite a nice strong ale though it needs more different grains for added complexity.

Pale malt extract to the desired gravity (about 1045 -1055 is probably good).
250-300g Simpsons heritage Crystal (assuming a 20-23 litre final volume)
Challenger and East Kent Goldings in equal additions at 60, 20 and 0 to hit an IBU between 35 and 50 (personal taste)
1028, 1968 or 1469 from Wyeast.

1968 seems to result in higher FG from my experience so you might consider replacing a portion of the extract with dex or some kind of invert sugar (say around 15-20%)

^ this, pretty much. Hops could be multitudinous combos, though. EKG + Fuggle throughout; fuggle 60, fuggle + styrian 20/0; fuggle 60, EKG + styrian 20/0; same, same, but EKG + fuggle, Styrian + EKG, Northdown @ 60 then any combo thereafter, challenger throughout, challenger @60/20 ekg and/or fuggle and/or [email protected] of permutations, combinations....Oh, I forgot Bramling cross.

Actually, all bramling is good....or Pacific Gem (a high alpha NZ hop) for 60, followed by bramling at 20/0. This is a killer combo. As is PG followed by fuggle/ styrian or EKG/styrian, or EKG/fuggle.....

For the 20 min and the 0 min additions, I would reccomend 0.5 to 0.75 g/L, combined with the 60min addition to bring to your total IBU. I would probably go 1050 OG / 40-45IBU, myself, depending on the attenuation properties of the yeast being used. Or there abouts.

Edit: hope this makes sense, as I'm half tanked. :icon_drunk:
