March 08, 2005 - A 1 million marketing campaign aims to replace traditional pints and halves with "female friendly" thirds in an attempt to shatter the macho image of beer.

The British Beer and Pub Association wants the smaller measures, served in large wine-style glasses, to lure female drinkers away from wine, alcopops and other fruit-based drinks. Trials of more "feminine" glasses are part of the association's "Beautiful Beer" campaign.

The beer industry is concerned at the growth of wine, which has overtaken beer as Britain's favorite drink. About 36% of women in pubs drink wine but only 14% cent drink beer.

Actually, I'm all for 1/3 pints at festivals. People have been asking for it for a long time now.

When you've got 50+ beers to try, you cant have a half of each, it just doesnt happen. 1/3's however....

We did try for some of the festivals I've been involved in organising, but Crown marked nip (third of a pint) glasses have always been too difficult and expensive to get hold of, even before you consider adding a logo - hopefully this will make it a lot easier.

(In the UK, weights and measures legislation requires everything to be measured with goverment stamped measures - in the case of draught beer this usually means goverment stamped glasses - and beer & cider can only legally be sold in third-of-a-pint, half-pint, pint or multiple-of-a-pint measures.)

More press about this today.

Smaller beer for British drinkers

LONDON, July 27, 2006 (AFP) - The British pint of beer is famous worldwide but now -- after a hundred years of neglect -- the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is reintroducing the "nip" or third-of-a-pint serving.

Beer will be dished out in nips at the Great British Beer Festival, which starts on Tuesday in London, Iain Loe, research and information manager at CAMRA, told AFP on Thursday.

There are only three ways legally to sell draught beer in Britain -- in pints (0.57 litres), halves and thirds -- but the nip has hardly been used in recent years.

"It went out of fashion in the early 1900s. It's a very sensible way to drink the stronger beers which were popular back then," Loe said.

The pint has become the standard way of serving beer in Britain, with the half pint slightly less popular.

Now CAMRA would like to see pub landlords bring back stemmed glasses with a third-of-a-pint clearly marked.

Its research shows 61 percent of 25- to 34-year-old women thought the smaller measure would help people drink beer in a "more responsible" way.

Loe said: "If you were drinking beer with a meal you could have three different beers and still only drink a pint.

"The third-of-a-pint gives people the chance to sample many different beers."

He is hoping the nip will prove popular at the annual Great British Beer Festival, where around 800 traditionally produced real ales will be on sale.
