Dry hopping

Hi guys,

I've got to dry hop a batch of pale ale on Wednesday and with a busy work schedule this week, will not have time to get to my local HBS to pickup a hop bag.

Would I be ok to dry hop in a new bamboo sock, provided I soaked it in boiling water first to sterilise it?

This definitely sound a bit tight I know and ill definitely buy a hop bag but I simply don't have the time before I need to dry hop on Wednesday, any thoughts or comments would be appreciated

If it's pellets, you can just throw them in as they are.

I don't know what a bamboo sock is but I have added various bits and pieces to brews using a sanitised stocking. If it's not likely to degrade or leach nasty ****, then it should be fine.

Thanks manticle, a bamboo sock is just like an ordinary cotton sock that you would wear on your foot but is made of bamboo fibres instead of cotton, but I'd not thought about the nylon stocking idea, SWMBO is going to wonder where that brand new pair of stockings has gone to

I would just throw them in, more effective and less chance of infection. Should sink to the bottom in 2-3 days.

Hi Barry,

I'm going to bottle straight from the primary, its a coopers fermenter and the bottle wand goes straight into the tap, do you reckon the hop pellet sludge would settle enough to not end up in the bottles?

Should be fine I do it quite often and I use the sediment reducer on the tap. You would need one hell of a lot in there to reach over the tap outlet. The only time it can be a problem is when you have to tip the fermenter over to get the last few litres into bottles.

Just run off the first cup full to be sure but it works for me. You might get a hop fragment or two in a bottle but it is suppose to be good luck.

If you cold crash at 1C for 4-5 days the yeast and hops will set like concrete on the bottom and below the tap outlet. I let the first 100 mls or so pour into a glass as a sacrifice to the home brew gods.

They've always granted me good beers because of this ritual.

Thanks for the advice guys, i've got to dry hop with 25g worth of Pellets so i'll just chuck them in.

Goin to dry hop my DIPA tonight when I get home,40grams of Citra roughly 1g per L,just going to open up the stainless fermenter and tip them in them cold crash for another week.
