Crimping the clap

Hi The only tool I don't have is the one to crimp the clamps - not sure what it is called (I have probably thrown a few away - they always seem to come in one of those kids science kits) - I have been using pliers but not really good. Is there something else I can do other than go to local hardware? Thanks

Do you have a set of vice grips? They work excellently.

I use the wire strippers I got from Stoopid cheap auto.

If they're being really different, the wire snippy bit will do the job well rather than the nose, but just watch that you don't slip or you end up with a nasty clip on the finger.

Which has been my issue.. probably have to take a trip... Think I have vice grips, how would you use those, would that not also just squash the whole top...? cheers

It does, but as long as you pull in the main clamp bit that's ok. I have 6-8" and as long as the very tip is right up against the main clamp section, it will pull in ok.

I got a pair of nail pincers like this from the hardware for about $10, works a treat> i looked at the mini pliers above but thought they might be a bit small to get enough leverage.

End cutters, I use them too.

I bought a super el cheapo pair and ground the edges down.

Little bit of alu T, a file and a bit of duct tape. Also had to move the keezer closer to the vice.

Easier to go get those $6 crimpers from Bunnings...

Yeah, but that idea will get you out of a pinch (or into one) on a midnight build frenzy without the right tool. Very cool!

Okay, but don't try an make a 3" wrench out of pine. Also don't half saw your finger off when doing it (watch the blood go all the places!). Also don't do it when you need to close one eye because the other one is drunk. And if you've left your phone on silent, and someone T-boned your wifes car while you were pissed/bleeding/cant-hear-phone... for the understatement of the year, you are in for a really bad night.
