Hi All,

Excuse my ignorance, but when using cling wrap on fermenter (not lid) what do you do to let gas escape and keep nasties out??

the rubber oring from under the fermenter lid, no need to poke holes in it (the gladwrap) lets the gas escape out the sides no worries.
 
I put a pin prick in the glad wrap. The gas does not escape by itself!
 
In the past I've used a pin hole.
When I couldn't find a pin, nothing.
Both methods yield the same result.
The positive pressure of the C02 coming off the wort seems to keep the bugs out.

Just make sure you don't cough or sneeze phlegm into the fermenter and you'll be sweet.
(I think that's how they make lambic, you know...)

I agree. I am a wrapper and have no trouble with gas...........(leaves comment hanging out there, ready to be hacked to death...)
 
Have only cling wrapped once, used the o-ring from inside the lid and didn't have any apparent issues with gas not being able to get out
 
The gas will always find a way out once it has produced some pressure difference - which is a nice, simple one-way valve - no pin hole needed.

But at 30C with a yeast designed to ferment at 30C, and a bucket-load of sugaz high gravity wort it can look she's gone in for breast enhancement ... looked like crater of a volcano under that gladwrap.

i use the o-ring now... i've done plenty of batches with cling wrap and no o-ring works just as well. No pin holes... waste of time

I too am a user of the glad wrap technique. The wrap is disposable and one less thing to clean. Plus it's easy to peer into the top at anytime.

What recipe/style was that beer, Bribie?
 
A pin prick completely defeats the purpose, the O-ring is definitely not a pressure resistant seal, the co2 will leak past it without much trouble.
 
Glad wrap with NO HOLES works, you just have to get over your initial fears and dependancy on your airlock.

Biere de Garde - kind of a broad style loosely based on a Saison, but not. Cranks at 30C and doesn't piss about.

I've also been using it lately for A/I/B PAs because my fermenting fridge has lagers in it this time of year and while it's not "clean" like most APA yeasts, it's clean for what it is, brings out the spec malts nicely and with all those late fruity hops (citra/amarillo/centenial/cascade) you can hardly tell it was fermented at 30C.

I've pricked the glad wrap a few times, and sometimes forgotten to. It will find its way out either way. I don't see any harm in pricking the glad wrap, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Either way I end up with a massive dome on top of my fermenter.

same here. ease of peering in / cleaning plus it allows me to fit a larger fermenter inside the fermenting fridge. Airlock didn't allow me to do that. Never put pin holes in it, never will.
 
The reason why you shouldn't pin prick a hole is because once fermentation subsides, the glad wrap, which has previously warped up like in Nick's picture, will now hang down. If the hole is somewhere near the middle, any condensation which you might possibly have in your fridge, will now run down your glad wrap, taking dust/pollution/bacterias/wild yeasts with it, and run directly towards the hole, then seeping into your precious beer.

Just a quick question on this. I have an old style fridge with the freezer at the top inside the fridge. The other day after fermentation I put the fridge on to low setting to crash chill before bottling. After a day I found that inside the cling wrap that frost had formed. The question i have, if this frost drops into the beer below will it have any affect? I removed the cling wrap and put some more on as I also chucked some hop in for dry hopping. Everything seems OK and the beers taste fine so hopefully should be alright.

Ps. Love using the cling wrap as one less thing to clean and can observe the happening in the fermenter. Cheers to whoever came up with this idea as I learnt it from this site. :super:

You could probably stuff a really small kitten in that pin prick hole to overcome that problem :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

The frost will be made of the same stuff thats inside the fermenter so should be no worries at all.
