Just bought my first kit from cleverbrewing.com.au and it is an American IPA.

After doing my last boil in about 4-5 litres (with LDME and hops added to an APA tin and BE2 later on), this boil is asking for 24 litres!

Ingredients:

1.85 kg LDME
1.7kg LLME
500 g Crystal Malt
Cascade and Styrian Goldings
US West Coast yeast

Instructions:
Steep crushed grain in 2.5 L @ 65.5 deg C for 30 mins.

Rinse grains with another 2.5 litres @ 65.5 deg C.

Bring to the boil (5 litres).

Add LDME and LLME and maltodextrin (200gm).

Top pot up to 24 litres !!! and boil.

Then the hop schedule @ 60 mins, 15 m ins, 5 mins and 1 min.

That's a lot of water for me to boil in my 9 L pot.

Can I just do it with about 8 litres and then top it all up in the FV? Will the bitterness of the hops dilute evenly with the added volume?
Cheers

That amount of malt doesn't sound anywhere near enough for a 24L AIPA, how much hops is there?

The utilisation of alpha acids decrease as the gravity increases, so by reducing the boil size with the total amount of fermentables in there you will have a higher gravity wort than if at full volume boil; decreased alpha acid utilisation.

You could increase the amount of hops to compensate or not use the whole amount of LDME/LLME, there's a couple of online ibu calculators to get you in the ball park.

So yeah, if you work out how many ibus you should get from each addition you could work it out and just do the 8L boil.

I couldn't work the calculator so I used the recipe builder instead to muck around with the boil size and amount of LDME.

This is what I came up with:

I couldn't find a "Crystal (Medium) Malt" so I selected a random one.

The EBC is the only thing that doesn't match the figures quoted by cleverbrewing.com.au

Not sure what that even is.. but seems to match the style in the calculator.
