INFORMATION:

Since 2005 the Homemade Beer and Wine Festival has been a celebration of tradition. People from all over the world have come to live in Darebin and have brought with them traditions and skills which have enriched our community. And a new generation of home brewers are keeping that tradition going.

The festival recognizes the practice of homemade wine and beer and offers an opportunity to show the wine and beer making skills of both overseas and Australian born residents in Darebin. The City of Darebin and NMIT are proud to acknowledge and celebrate this tradition.

Went to the website and had a look at an entry form, specifies in bold type:
HAND DELIVER applications and bottles to:

So looks as though postal entries are not an option.
Not that I have ever entered one of my beers in a comp.
Always interested though.

Never entered a comp before, but this is pretty close to home so I reckon I'll have a crack.

Would have loved to have gone but SWMBO's birthday party seems to be pretty well inked onto the calender. Sound's like a fun day

Any chance of some more information about how judging is done? Will feedback be provided? The instructions say to provide one bottle, which I assume is a 750ml bottle. Can we provide two 330 - 375ml stubbies instead?

This comp appears to be a Council run one and not part of the VicBrew Annual Competition schedule of events - so you would assume there would be not really much in the way of BJCP accredited representation at it on judging. I note there is an association with NMIT so you may get some people from there involved (Costanzo Brewing consultants held courses at NMIT) or the sponsors (like 3 ravens) but that would be it one would think.

A similar event is run through Warrandyte Festival - earlier this year the judging of that was done by the guy who runs Buckleys Brewing (who also sponsored prizes for that). Since the prize for this for beer comp is sponsored by 3 ravens - you'd assume 3 ravens would have some involvement in picking a winner.

As to how much beer to enter its a good question. Doesn't say anything anywhere - there is a contact email, good idea to use that and find out methinks.

Hopper.

Not so sure I'd be trusting his palate for that, nor too keen on the prize if it's related to the brewery.

I'll chuck a bottle of APA in this I think.

I asked all the same questions weeks ago and all I got back from the organiser was a cut and paste job from the website that I had already read and created the questsions I'd asked about.

Also look at the bit I bolded. I'd ask again but prob wont get any answer. I take it we are also suppossed to be there on the day with bottles avavailable for tasting by the public or others? So a comp entry and free beer to be given away, beer judged by non beer judges and only one prize in the beer section?

TERMS & CONDITIONS:
ONE application form and ONE bottle MUST be provided for each type of wine/beer
entered into the competition. If you are entering 2 wines into the competition, 2
applications and 2 bottles MUST be submitted.
Bottles MUST be delivered to the City of Darebin, Preston Customer Service Centre
by 4:00pm Friday 29th October 2010.
Bottles MUST be clearly labelled with name and type of wine/beer.
All type of wine/beer entered in the competition MUST be on display and available
for tasting at the Festival on Saturday 6th November 2010.
Numerous bottles may be entered into the competition however entrants are only
eligible to win one prize each year.
To ensure equality winners from the 2009 Homemade Beer and Wine Festival are

That's how I interpret the info on the website too Chad. Doesn't seem worth the hassle, especially when my main aim for entering is just to get some qualified feedback on my beers.

Yeah I would think this would put a lot of brewers off as its not only putting out more beer there but a lot of us are more time poor too this time of the year.

i really dont think its meant to be a "bjcp" type comp. appealling to all the dad HB'ers out there, your not gonna get detailed feedback score sheets. imo it looks like a bit of fun, as someone else said warrandyte do one and so does Eltham at some stage of the year.

enter a beer or dont, just have some fun. might even rock down with some kooinda's if we get a chance.

Hi. Ash from the city of Darebin here. NMIT will provide the judging forms. 3 Ravens are kindly going to taste and judge the entries.
You need to be there on the day as part of the entry process and we can make your tasting notes available. As you also need to bring a sample, its also a fun way to meet other entrants and get informal feedback.

Ash from the City of Darebin again. Thanks for your interest and feedback. Its really important to us as it is an event for the community and helps us grow the Festival.
The wonderful 3 Ravens have volunteered to judge using NMIT's assesment forms.
Your judging notes will be available to you on the day.
But you do need to be there on the day as part of the entry process. Hopefully you can come along on Saturday.
Thanks again.

Woo-hoo- I won the 'encouragement' award, also known as 'second place', i hope. i remember what the encouragement award meant at school sports...

it was a fun day, great to meet a few local brewers. looking forward to receiving my score sheets, as i have never had 'formal' feedback for my beers before.

they suggested to bring one or two bottles of your beer for public tasting, which i did...20 min into the 3 hr festival, i was out of beer. so a quick cycle home, filling of 12 long necks from the keg (with a funnel), cycle back, and then all the beer was finished before the 5pm finish. the people of darebin know how to drink!

managed to get my face onto vasili's garden for a short interview...

great day all up,

for any of the brewers i met, if you are on AHB...cheers!

not sure which beer it was- i entered an american pale, an english brown and a bock. likewise the first place winner, entered 2 beers, so isn't sure which one was the winner. score sheets will come in the mail.
