Made an immersion chiller this morning from some copper pipe. Looks pretty crude but works a treat. I did a test with just water and it reduced the temp to 35 deg in about 10 min. I was impressed. :)

My question is whether there would be any undesirable effects from chilling the wort twice or more. ie after steeping grains to strain into my boiling pot from my urn and then after the boil? I can't see reason why there would but thought i would check first. Can't wait to use it on a real batch.

Hi Kieren

Only need to chill once - after the boil before going into the fermenter.

Drop the chiller into the boil 10 mins before flame out to sterilise.
 
i do it just like you....
except for the last 10*C or so.... i have a little pre chiller "chiller" sitting in an ice bucket (water runs through this only once the wort is down to 30*C), works a treat.
