A BREWERY'S ban on all-day drinking has prompted a walk-out, with workers disgusted they have to limit their consumption to lunchtime.

I recon these Dane's need a bit of HTFU. oh poor you, your company will now only supply you with free booze during lunch every day instad of all day. poor you!

if its a cultural thing and they really wanted to ensure that their workers werent drunk they could install breathalizers on the site and require workers to test themselves periodically to makjre sure they werent drunk. easy solution.

then again i recon just being able to be half cut all day is not a responsible workplace. as much as i';d love to work in such a workplace. Im mean christ, in Aust you've got companies like woolworths that wont let there employees have anything to drink whilst on the clock. and that includes their hotel arm (ALH Group).

When I lived in Cardiff in the 70s my mate's brother was a drayman and they would have to drink a pint at every pub they delivered to. Needless to say they were permanently pissed. Ah the good old days. "Delivery Vehicle Frequently Stopping"?? :beerbang:

My understanding is that no one working under an alcohol licence is is allowed to drink on the clock. This would go beyond Woolies policy.

nup. the ALH guys often go to lunch and drink incl going with Bruce Jr and other senior staff (well they used to). this is the admin side of things, so accountants, business managers etc etc, not the actual 'hotel' staff.

edit: your right about the hotel staff having to be alc free (well everyone has to be alc free now).

Ah, my mistake. Sorry.

RE Woolworths policy on alcohol - since an incident concerning ONE public facing (BWS?) staff & a customer, ALL WoW staff may face disciplinary action or dismissal if found to have consumed alcohol during business hours. Perhaps there is another rule for ALH management... thou ALH has there own rules for pokie taxes as well (until they lose at court ... )

When I first visited the Swan Brewery (around 1960), there was beer on tap for for all employees whenever.
I worked in a machine shop in Perth of 300 employees at that time and everybody sat at their machines for smoko and lunch. A visiting engineer from Germany witnessed this and asked me why nobody was having a beer. He said they did the same thing in his factory, but almost everybody had a bottle or two with their food. I guess it helped in finding that last couple of thou on a bearing diameter.

I know a lot of businesses now dont even have friday knock off beers any more.

I've even heard of some businesses who instead of having a tab or supplied drinks at christmas etc functions they are given a "function bonus" which is 'supposed' to be used to purchase refreshments and it is 'hoped' that any remaining money would be given to a nominated charity at the end of the night / event care of a special collection bucket placed near the door.
A mate of mine went to a christmas function where he was breatholised on his way out and advised not to drive. Not that it was an issue for him being that his appartment was less than 300 mtrs up the road.
IMO I see no issue with a breatholyser. My concern here would be - how accurate is it and if its not is this opening more of a hole towards litigation. As for the "function bonus" again i dont really see this as too much of an issue - more a PITA as an open bar means no queing up.

It makes me wonder if there is has been a case where an employer has been sued / prosicuted for supplying an employee with alcohol which lead to a DUI or accident? Or is this just a case of people protecting their asses "just in case".
That said I do think that having a beer whilst on the tools is a little keen. Sure in a small office / workshop you might get away with it but I still think its asking for trouble. After knock off sure crack a beer and socialise - I think its important for team moral to have a bit of socialising after work.

nah it was before that. a woolworths exec got fired for having drinks at lunch and then a memo went out to all ALH staff about not being able to drink. I should follow it up with a mate whose in ALH management.

My mob has a zero alcohol policy and, being a 24/7 customer support centre we have a fair few gen Y employees who like to club - a few have been sacked for coming in at 7 am Sunday morning reeking of TED or Bundy. However once a year we have the awards night which is an acknowledged pissup, we take over an entire CBD 4* hotel and for a very CBD-reasonable $100 or so plus a huge cooked brekkie, you can stay over. However on the evening shift it's quite common to hear "it's beer o'clock what the f&^K am I doing sitting here?" :p

In the old days the delivery guys always used to ask for a staffy to take with them....
They did not keep them until then end of shift!
One guy would be sober and drive while the other would get pissed and still work.
I wonder if earlier than then that they both got pissed...

SirDrinkalot I can remember that occuring as late as 2005, and I can only assume it does still happen.
