with my first ag brew i discovered a wee problem in my monitoring precedures

brew day went well.....ag wit double batch ie 45 litres

1050 OG reading spot on

left to ferment

wondered why it took 3 weeks to ferment??????

bottled

conditioned 3 weeks in fridge

sampled and it was great!!

i tallie (750ml) later and a very smug homebrewer was feeling decidely pissed

thats odd i think only 1 tallie and i am really smashed

i think back.......mmmm 3 weeks fermenting......mmmmm does taste like it is high alcohol.......

I took the OG reading out of mash tun at about 65 degrees and didnt correct it

real OG about 1070

no wonder it took 3 weeks to ferment

still a decidely tasty drop tho

Sounds like a nice mistake to make.

So what gravity were you actually reading? Temperature correction aside, what comes out of your mashtun generally depends on what stage of mashing/sparging you are at.

If you mashed, then chucked all the sparge water in on top, stirred like buggery then drained it your gravity reading would reflect your preboil gravity. Of course if you then boiled it, your OG is going to be higher again.

Your efficiency must have been up around 150% or something.

OTOH if you measured the 1st runnings from the mash tun before sparging then you would expect the gravity to be high.

To get a good OG reading, take a sample from the fermenter before you pitch the yeast.
