Caramalisation, How?

I have seen a couple of recipes that suggest caramalising a small part of the wort, but no description on how this is actually done.

Any help on this?
 
basically you take a small part off, put it on the stove and cook it hard untuill it ruduces down and turns a caremal color
 
Quicker and cheaper to take a small portion out and boil it down in a separate saucepan. Just be careful you don't heat it too much and burn it.
