I put down some JAO mead a few months ago. Given the low quantities and the ease of my first batch, I didn't take OG readings.
I bottled it the other day. My mead came out at 1050 and my melomel came out at 1070. Ouch.
I am told I can calculate the OG with the help of my FG readings on a hydro and a refracto.
My melomel has an FG of 1070 and a refracto reading of 1086 (20.65 brix).
Brewheads has a calculator: http://www.brewheads.com/refract-getog.php, but I've found their calculators to give wrong data in the past. It suggests an OG of 2.183. Not sure I trust that.
I can see references to using the morebeer spreadsheet here: http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/forum/vie...=19&t=21873, but whenever I try to follow it, the spreadsheet doesn't seem to work as advertised.
Any tips on how to do the maths?
