I boughr a "30L" camping water container at Bunnings as a backup fermenter, and the same unit has been mentiones on other threads. Turns out it has some good qualities: lid fits w/o leakage; drum tap fits nicely w/o washer; thick, blue HDPE sides translucent enough to see liquid level. But when I measured in water marking the sides, I found out it held 25L, not 30. I measured twice by volume and once by weight, with the same results. For my purposes that does not matter, but it could to some brewers. I do believe in truth in labeling.

You got the square one right? It wasn't like the round 25's were incorrectly labelled as the 30's? Just checking cos my 30 definitely holds 30....

It was the round one and labeled 30L, maybe just a store shelving error.

Sounds like store shelving error.

I've got the (square) 30L ones and the markings on it are most certainly lower than what the real volume is. At least 1L lower than actual volume when it's at batch volumes of about 23L. If my volume reaches the 22L marker I know it's more like 23L, and so on. I haven't been bothered to measure it out precisely.

So it's a bit of an issue if you want to be precise for bulk priming or keeping records. One day I'll get around to measuring out and re-marking the Litre markers myself.

Other than that they're great fermenters and great size/shape for a fermentation fridge; a more economical use of space than cylindrical-shaped fermenters.

Yeah, I've got one of the 30L bunnings cubes and they are definitely 30L in capacity, the cylindrical ones are a 25L container

Just do what i do, just partially (well not on purpose) ferment a lager out, lager it and then watch it blow up like a soccer ball!

Between that and the odd no chill, reckon my bunnings jerry now holds 30L !!!!!!!!

Yeah those markings on the side are more of a guideline.

I bottled some beer a couple of weeks ago, did two batches into the bottling bucket. The liquid level was just above the 24ltr mark and using scales there turned out to be about 27 ltrs.

Not a massive issue in this case however with a saison that I'm planning to prime at a higher rate. A miscalculation could be bad.

I was more concerned about high velocity glass flying around the shed.

12.5% is table strength isn't is haha

The round ones are definitely 25L, I bought one for a buddy to make cider. We made 24L batches of Aldi cider, two cartons of juice and there wasn't much headspace, which is ok with cider.

Had never thought to check vessel volumes. How about the markings on the trusty plastic homebrew fermenters, can I be confident on those?
